“Fuck, I forgot.” Chance steepled his fingers together, his blue eyes searching mine.

“For some reason, I keep hoping it will lead me to River. Obviously, I’ve lost my fucking mind.”

Chance’s brows knitted together. “I can see why this is important.” He blew out a big breath.

“I think we need to sit on it. This was huge progress, Holden. You at least know it was a little boy calling your name. Up until now, he was faceless. I’m sure as you sleep more, the puzzle will reveal itself.” Jace stood. “Why don’t you try to get some rest? I have a feeling we’ll all be at the hospital tomorrow. We need to be at our best for Brynn.”

Jace was right, but I was terrified to fall asleep. The more I discovered about my lost memories, the more questions I had, and the more I doubted what I saw. What if it was nothing and I had a vivid imagination?

Not likely, the little voice in my head whispered.

Chapter Thirty-Six

The following day, I woke up early after a fitful night of sleep. The Portland sun streamed through the penthouse windows, casting a cheerful smile into the room. I hoped like hell I would have something to smile about as well.

Zayne, Chance, Jace, and I were quiet as we walked down the hospital hall toward Brynn’s room. Chance had called before we came over to make sure there weren’t any changes, and we could see her. Brynn had made some progress overnight, and they were considering bringing her out of the coma if she continued to do well.

Rounding the corner by the nurse’s station, I came to an abrupt halt. “What the fuck?” I said a little too loudly.

Tim left Brynn’s room and stepped into the hall. He raised his hands in surrender. “Before you lose your shit, I got your message. I wanted to see for myself that she’s okay, that’s all.”

Chance didn’t even spare him a backward glance as he darted around him and into her room. Jace was hot on his heels, and Zayne remained by my side.

My hands clenched and unclenched. “Okay. You’ve seen Brynn, now you’re finished. Don’t you ever go near her again,” I growled. Hell, he could have slipped something into her IV to finish her off for all I knew. There wasn’t a single fucking thing I trusted about this monster.

“Son, I’m not trying to cause any trouble. When you said she’d died—”

I grabbed him by the lapels of his Armani suit jacket and slammed him against the wall, my face a mere inch from his. “You listen to me you pathetic motherfucker. I beat your ass once and the next time I won’t stop until you’re dead.”

Tim stiffened, then grinned. “You don’t know who you’re screwing with, ya little dick.”

“Let go of him, Holden,” Zayne said in a calm tone. “We need to take this elsewhere.”

“Listen to your little babysitter, Holden. If you don’t want to hear what else I came here to tell you, then …” He gave me a half-shrug.

I released his jacket and walked backward. “Outside. Now.” I refused to play any more games with him. He’d been jerking me around for way too long.

I draped my arm over his shoulders and pulled him against me, ensuring he wouldn’t take off before I was finished with him. Zayne was on high alert as he led us to the elevator. When the doors slid open, we entered, and I reached for the main floor button. Zayne’s hand shot out and stopped me. He lifted a brow before he pushed the garage button. He obviously knew something about this hospital that I didn’t.

Tim rubbed his stubbled jawline. “It doesn’t have to be like this. It really doesn’t.”

My nails dug into his shoulder. “You’re the one who made it this way, not me.”

As soon as we arrived, Zayne stepped out first and led us behind a row of cars and into a tucked-away corner. The smell of oil and rubber assaulted my nose, and my nostrils flared.

“As long as you stay in this area, the camera won’t pick up anything. It’s a blind spot.” Zayne nodded, then backed up far enough to give me room to do whatever I deemed necessary.

“What else do you need to tell me?” Tension slithered down my neck and between my shoulder blades.

“As I was trying to explain, I just came to see Brynn. She’s been a part of our lives since she was a kid, Holden. Regardless of what you think of me, I care about her.”

I chuckled. “Okay, fine. Let’s say I buy into that bullshit.”

“I would never hurt her.” Pain flickered across his features, and I wondered if there was a soul in him after all. My hope was smashed to smithereens with his following sentence.

“I also came to tell you that I can’t get River back. It’s too late, Holden.” Regret shadowed his face briefly. “I tried.”

“Did you? Or was this payback because she put you in your place when you tried to rape her?” I asked, spittle flying out of my mouth. “Did you know what happened from the beginning?” Somewhere in the corner of my mind, I recalled that we still had his car bugged and not to blow it.
