Barrett quickly stood, then the sound of his zipper echoed in the space.

Panic curled in the pit of my stomach. “No. No. Please don’t. I’ll do whatever you want, but not this.” Tears clouded my vision as I begged and pleaded.

“Too late. You had your chance to cooperate and now I’m going to take it,” Barrett growled. He ran the tip of his cock against the back of my leg.

“Stop!” I choked on the snot in my throat. “I’m pregnant. Please don’t hurt me.”

Complete silence filled the cell, and I slammed my eyes shut, preparing myself for Barrett to continue.

“Goddammit,” Barrett said, stepping away from me. “Stand up. I have to clear everything with the boss now.”

He jerked me by my hair, and I straightened as he removed the cuffs from my ankles, then my wrists. “I’ll bring you more clothes later.”

With that, he stomped out of my cell and left me alone. I placed my hand against my stomach. What had I done? Had my outburst just saved or killed us?

“Reid?” I called out. Only silence responded.

I snatched the useless scraps of my dress off the floor and wrapped them around my breasts. I tore another strip and hurried over to the sink. Turning on the hot water, I allowed it to warm up as I tried to gain control of my tears. Once it was ready, I wet the smallest piece of the material and scrubbed the inside of my thighs, and everywhere else that piece of shit had licked and sucked on me. “Fucking bastard,” I whispered and placed my palm against the wall for balance as I cleaned the Barrett scum residue off me the best I could.

Finally feeling a little better, I used the last piece of fabric and wrapped it around my waist. It wasn’t much, but at least I was covered. Scrambling into bed, I curled up on the corner of the mattress and draped the blanket around me. My breath stuttered in my throat as I realized that eventually, Barrett would be back. I stared at the prison gate and waited.

The sun had disappeared, and the moonlight filtered in through my window. Barrett hadn’t shown up again, not even with the clothes he’d promised. At least I was covered and warm for the time being.

Two sets of footsteps echoed through the hall, and I cringed at the sound of a cell door scraping against the cement floor. I remained quiet but hoped Reid had returned. If so, I suspected he would wait until he was certain no one else was around before he spoke.

Sweat broke out over my skin as fresh anger coursed through my body. I wasn’t property. I was a human being, not a goddamn sex slave.

“River?” Reid’s deep voice floated through the air, instantly calming me.

“Reid?” It was probably stupid that I asked if it was him when I knew it was, but I had to make sure.

“I’m back.” He sighed softly. “I thought about you today … wondered if they’d started your training.” The familiar creak of his mattress told me he’d probably crawled into his bed.

“I thought about you today, too. I hope you weren’t hurt.” The strangeness of our conversation hadn’t escaped me. We’d met twenty-four hours ago, yet he was already my lifeline. I cared about what happened to him.

“It was a good day as far as that goes. What about you?”

I sniffled. “Barrett came back, but he stopped right before he raped me.”

“What? I don’t understand. That’s really weird. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he did, but I’m a bit confused.”

If I closed my eyes, I could imagine what Reid looked like from the details he’d provided me. I imagined there was a crease in his forehead at the moment.

“I told him I’m pregnant.”

A low whistle escaped Reid. “No shit?”

“I found out the day I was kidnapped and brought here. My boyfriend doesn’t know. Well, he might now. I dropped my purse on the club’s loading dock right before I was tossed into the back of a moving truck like a fucking Raggedy Ann doll.” I questioned if Reid even knew what a rag doll was or if he’d lived in this hell for so long, he’d not even heard of her.

“That’s fucked up.”

“Yeah. I have no idea what that means for me now. Barrett stopped and said he had to speak to the boss. Do you know what he meant by that?” I massaged the back of my neck, where a nagging pain was beginning to throb.

“No, I don’t have any friends here, River. You’re it. I’ve not been allowed to talk to any of the girls here, so if they got pregnant, I wouldn’t know anything about it. I wish I could tell you something different.”

I sank my teeth into my bottom lip, wishing he had some information as well.

“There’s one thing I do know,” he said.
