She tilted her head to the side and studied my horrified expression, then strolled over to me as though she didn’t have a care in the world. “I get that a lot.” She offered me a kind smile.

“What do you mean?” I refused to take my attention off of her.

“Come, sit down.” She patted the back of the couch. “Let’s chat.”

Even though she was attempting to be nice, I knew better. Still, I did as I was told. A chill skated up my spine, and I chose the seat nearest the fire. My heart jackhammered against my chest while I waited for her to continue.

She sat across from me and crossed her legs. “My name is Kassandra.”

Fuck. Holden’s mom had multiple personalities!

My palms grew sweaty, but I still had the presence of mind not to wipe them on the dress or expensive furniture.

“Kassandra,” I repeated.

“Yes. I’m Catherine’s twin sister.”

I didn’t fucking believe her. She looked and moved exactly like Catherine. She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, and I paid attention to the subtle differences. The way she walked, how her upper lip curled at the right side before she smiled, and the beauty mark on her left cheek next to the corner of her eye. Shit. She wasn’t lying. I struggled to breathe, the truth crushing my chest.

“It’s okay, darling. I realize all of this must be a bit of a shock to your system, a fact I understand very well. You can’t imagine my reaction when I was informed that you’re pregnant. Not to mention that my nephew is the father. Holden hasn’t seen me since he was a toddler. I’m not even sure he remembers me. Regardless, it makes us practically family.”

I squirmed in my seat, trying to contain my racing pulse. Kassandra was like a lion waiting to devour its prey—me.

I nodded stupidly. “I took a pregnancy test the day I was kidnapped and brought here,” I finally said, finding my words again. A spark of courage ignited inside me, and I straightened my back and shoulders. “Are … are you the person behind the sex ring?” Apparently, I’d found a pair of balls.

“I am. Along with someone else.” Kassandra peeked at her watch. “I’m sure you have so many questions, but I would like to wait for a few minutes.”

I frowned, then realized whoever the other person was would most likely join us.

“Would you like anything else to eat?” Kassandra’s tone was overly sweet, the spider luring in the fly to her sticky, inescapable web.

“No.” I cleared my throat and nervously glanced around the room. “Thank you for the food earlier.” I could match that sweet side of her with my own, but given a chance, I wouldn’t hesitate to take her out either. Thoughts of countless people being hurt and raped assaulted my mind. Anger roared to life, and I quickly stuffed it down. Tread carefully.

“I’m terribly sorry I’m late.” I twisted around in my seat, identifying the new voice.

“Not a problem. River and I were just getting to know each other a little better.” Kassandra stood and kissed the older woman on the cheek.

“Ah, yes, River. You’re as stunning as Michelle claimed.” The woman gave me a smile that matched Kassandra’s as she strolled over to me. She searched my face as she tilted my chin up and turned my head to the left, then right.

I blanched. “Michelle told you about me?” My pitch rose with my question.

“She did. We also had an investor in 4 Play scout for us, but then she was exposed and has gone into hiding. When girls are drunk, they’re easy to take. As for Michelle, she’s an exceptional employee, but I digress. My name is Opal. I’m Kassandra and Catherine’s mother.”

I stared at the two women, pleading with my stomach to keep the food down. If not for me, for the baby. A sex ring run by women—not men. Twisted, depraved women. These two were what motherfucking nightmares were made of. Goddammit, Holden needed to know. I had to make it out of here so he could learn the truth.

Opal settled next to Kassandra and tucked a strand of her salt and pepper hair behind her ear. Diamonds sparkled from every manicured finger. She slid her hands down her white blouse and navy slacks.

I gulped, unsure where this conversation was going. Once I was returned to my cell, I would allow myself to process everything, but not yet. I couldn’t afford to lose my shit now. I’d been so wrong. I wasn’t here because of Dan, Logan, or even Tim. I was here because of Michelle, along with Holden’s aunt and grandmother. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

“How long have you and Holden been together? From what Michelle said, you two were serious,” Opal said.

For a second, I looked at her blankly. Were? More like are, you crazy bitch. Opal was insane and intelligent, which made her incredibly dangerous.

“Five months.”

Opal glanced at Kassandra. “I see.” She offered me a tight smile that didn’t reach her cold, emotionless eyes.

“Does Catherine know?” I blurted. “That her sister and mother sell children?” I slammed my mouth closed, chiding myself for not being careful with what I said.
