My hand fluttered over my heart. “I didn’t know you were there.”

His green eyes assessed me, then he spoke. “The retina scanners won’t be installed for a few days, so you’re stuck with me.”

I cracked a grin even though he didn’t. “Can I ask a personal question?”

“You can ask anything you want. I just might not answer.” He folded his hands in front of his waist.

“That’s fair. I’ve noticed that you don’t wear a wedding band. Are you in a relationship?”

Zayne’s brow arched slightly. “I don’t have time.”

“I get that. It sounds like you stay busy with work.” I tapped my chin with my finger. “Well, if you need some stress release, my best friend Brynn would be happy to help.” Before he could respond, I turned away and started to walk down the hall to the elevator with a huge-ass grin on my face. Zayne might not reach out to Brynn, but I had at least planted the seed.

I pulled my phone from my back pocket and typed out a text to her.

Zayne is single, doesn’t have time for a relationship, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have time to play. I let him know if he wanted to relieve some stress to reach out to you.

The elevator arrived, and Zayne and I entered, then I punched the button for the penthouse floor. My cell vibrated with a message.

Helllzzz yes! Thanks, babe.

I glanced at Zayne from the corner of my eye and stifled my laugh. The dude was seriously uptight. Brynn might be exactly what he needed.

Sixty seconds later, I entered the construction zone and immediately spotted Holden with a gray hard hat on. Although walls were now roughed in, I could still see through them, but it was definitely taking shape. A table was the only furniture in the wide-open area, and Holden and another guy were focused on papers spread out across the surface.

I started to approach them when Zayne gently grabbed my shoulder. “Wait here. It’s not safe.”

Even though he was my bodyguard, I felt that he’d just gone the extra mile to take care of me.

I hung back, watching as Zayne strolled up to the men. Holden’s head popped up, then a wide grin split his face. He said something to the guy he was with, but I couldn’t hear over all the hammers and saws.

Holden hurried over, then wrapped me in a warm embrace. “I’ve missed you.” He pressed his mouth to mine, and my heart melted.

“I’ve missed you too. How’s it going?” My gaze swept over the busy room. Men were working in every area.

“It’s only the first day, but we’re already ahead of schedule. John and I were reviewing the plans and making some minor changes. You and I will need to pick out the floors and furnishings. Hell, we need to do it for each room.” He beamed at me and smoothed my hair.

“I’m excited.” I stretched up and gave him a lingering kiss.

“Me too. You’re the only girl I’ve lived with, and now we’re picking out the details for our first home together.”

“The first one?” Confused, I frowned.

“First.” He kissed my forehead. “Then we’ll have vacation homes, and maybe someday we’ll move from Spokane. Until then, we can fly in from anywhere in the country, and stay for a week. I’ll have Chance oversee the daily responsibilities here in Spokane and take care of the rest remotely. Chance does a lot of that already, so it won’t be a problem.”

“Really?” I was surprised to learn about his plans. For some reason, I’d never considered our future past where we were, but apparently, Holden had. Not only that, but I was in his life down the road.

“I love you so much.” I slipped my arms around his neck and laid my head against his chest, the beat of his heart against my ear.

“Let’s meet after work for drinks and you can tell me all about your day.”

“I can’t wait,” I replied.

Holden kissed me goodbye, then I watched him walk away, admiring his jeans hugging his ass and muscular thighs.

I’m not sure Holden could deliver better news than that the penthouse was already ahead of schedule. Even though we had a retina scanner and updated security at Holden’s house, I wasn’t sleeping well. The minute I closed my eyes, Tim’s sneer filled my mind. Holden had enough on his plate, so I hadn’t mentioned it to him. A part of me whispered that we’d never be safe from Tim. My stomach clenched and twisted into knots. Little did I know how accurate my instincts were.
