“I get it, but don’t be afraid of him, Evie.”

“Well, it’s not like I’ll ever see him again,” I point out. “But I appreciate him going out of his way to help me on your behalf.”

She’s quiet, and I’m thinking of what to say when she says, “Are you going to write to me? Keep me updated on the life of Evie Hemingway, you know yourself there isn’t much entertainment around here.”

“Sure. Text me your details.”

Maybe this is a genuine friendship blossoming after all.

“What are your plans tonight? How are you going to celebrate your new job?”

Rolling my eyes, I mutter, “Oh, you know, a hot bubble bath, followed by a night in front of the TV before going to bed in an empty house. The usual.”

“That’s so fucking sad… Oh, I’ve just had the best idea!”

“Okay?” I drawl out.

I can never catch my breath with her. She’s so full on all the time.

“I’m going to get my brother to take you out. You need to let loose and have some fun.”

“You don’t have to—”

“It’s fine, Evie, absolutely no trouble. Expect him around eight.”

“No, no, no. You really don’t need to—” She hangs up before I can get out, “—do that.”

Oh, fuck.

This isn’t happening. Everything inside me races away. But with one thought, I instantly calm down.

It’s one thing for him to take me shopping because his sister asked him to, but it’s not like he’s going to take more time out of his day, or night, to pander to her and take boring old me out.

Settling in front of the TV, I flick through the channels and settle on an old sitcom.

Eight o’clock came and went an hour ago, and there was no knock at the door. I knew he wouldn’t just take me out because Lexi asked him to. I mean, who does that?

Reaching for my mug of tea, my heart stops when there are three knocks at the door.

No fucking way.

I don’t dare move until the second round of knocking disturbs the quietness of the house. Slowly, I look through the curtains to see it’s Louis.

Oh my God. How could I have been so wrong?

My heart pounds in my chest, and I forget to breathe. He knocks a third time, and I swallow thickly as I walk through the hall and to the front door. Swinging it open, he stands before me looking… sexy. His black shirt clings to his slender, hard arms, and his jeans fit perfectly around his thighs. Then here I am, in my pyjamas, with my hair piled on top of my head.

“Lexi told me you were expecting me?” he says, sounding unsure.

“I didn’t think she was being serious, and I didn’t expect you to drop whatever plans you had.”

“Lucky for you, I had no plans tonight. Go get changed. I’ll wait out here.”

My mouth opens, but he jumps in before I can speak.

“Do I need to remind you of the grief my sister will give me if I don’t do as she says?”

“I—”
