Breaking apart from Louis, he looks to me to take the lead.

Placing my hand on his shoulder, I say, “This is my friend, Louis.”

“He drove us home yesterday.”

“Yes, he did. He’s going to be around from time to time. Is that okay with you?”

He shrugs his shoulders, not caring, and runs back over to climb up the slide. Both Louis and I watch him go.

“Looks like your boy will be fine. There’s no one to hide behind now, sweetheart.”

“I wasn’t trying to hide, Louis. I’m just petrified of something going wrong again.”

His eyes hold me in place, and I dare not look away.

“I swear to you, you don’t have anything to be afraid of anymore. I won’t let it happen. When you feel like this, talk to me, and I’ll do everything I can to squash it.”

I forgot how easy it is to be with someone. Your woes are their woes. I’ve gotten stuck in my single mentality. Even when I was with Callum, I was the one who had to deal with everything. After the first couple of years with him, I learned to depend on myself alone. Louis is offering me what seems like a real partnership, and I want to fall headfirst and completely.

“You’re really not going anywhere, are you?”

The smile creeping along his lips has me melting and falling even harder.

“No. Not when it comes to you. You better start learning to trust me, because it’ll make this journey a lot smoother.”

I take in his club patches, realising he hasn’t given me a reason not to trust him. He warned me he wouldn’t share club business with me, and I admitted to myself I wouldn’t want to know, anyway. He also promised me I wouldn’t have anything to do with that part of his life. But a part of me worries that a split lifestyle will eventually end in trouble, but when he’s around, I can’t help myself.

“Obviously, you know Thomas is my priority. If you two don’t get on, I’ll have to walk away.”

If I don’t say it now, I’ll regret it.

“Hey, the kid’s going to love me. Don’t worry about that.”

Laughing feels so good, and he catches it with another kiss. After a moment, I pull away and ask, “When did you say you’d be back in town?”

“A couple of days. If you need me, call me.”

Moving closer to him, I hold on to his leather and lean up on my toes. My lips are mere inches from his when he says, “If you kiss me, you don’t get to try and end this again.”

Hearing what he’s saying, I run my tongue along my bottom lip. He wants the same reassurances I’m looking for. Pressing my lips to his, I forget where I am. Forget all the worries and fears I had leading up to seeing him today. He just feels so right.

Laying out Thomas’s school uniform for the morning, I can’t help but feel like everything in the world is perfect.

For once, there’s nothing for me to fight against. I lay my outfit out for work next to his and laugh quietly to myself. This time last month, I was lost. Maybe I can have it all: be a mother, work my job, and continue to get to know Louis. Maybe I can be one of the few that gets my happily ever after.

After brushing my teeth and checking in on Thomas, I settle into bed and see I’ve got a text from Louis waiting.

Curling up, I open his message, feeling the grin spreading across my lips.

Hey, beautiful. How’s your day been?

Seeing that he sent the message twenty minutes ago, I type one straight back.

It’s been good. I took Thomas out for pizza when we left the park. How’s your day been?

I didn’t ask him what business was taking him out of town, but I’d be lying if I haven’t been wondering what it is exactly that he does.

I wait for his response, but my phone rings instead. Answering, I say quietly, “Hey.”
