She looks to me and huffs, “And you think Thomas is safe around someone like him?”

Clearing my throat, I nod. “Yes, I do.”

“You’ve truly lost your head. This isn’t the last of this.”

Snatching her handbag from the table, she nearly topples the chair in her haste to snatch up her jacket. Without saying goodbye to Thomas, she storms out, and I finally feel like I can breathe again.

“I don’t think my nanny likes you, Louis,” Thomas murmurs, keeping his attention on his colouring book. For some reason, that makes me laugh.

“As long as you like me, buddy, I don’t care.”

Oh, Christ. He’s making me fall even harder for him.

“Thomas, take your crayons up to your room. Dinner won’t be long.”

I wait until he’s out of the room and lean against the counter. My shoulders sag, not having to keep up the pretence that my mother isn’t going to be a problem. Louis steps in front of me and holds onto my arms.

“I won’t let her take your boy away, Evie. Trust me.”

“I do.”

He stood in and defended me today, and I won’t ever forget it. I don’t fear this man—I’m safe.

“If it comes down to it, I’ll fight her in court. I just wish I didn’t have to.” Wrapping his arms around me, I sink into his embrace. “I’m cooking dinner. Are you staying?”

“If you’ve got enough.”

“Oh, I have enough. I have a food fairy that keeps dropping groceries off while I’m at work.”

His smirk gets to me, and I lean up to kiss it.

Pulling out of his arms, I turn to finish peeling the potatoes when he slaps my arse and opens the fridge, pulling out a bottle of water.

This guy.

From now on, I’m all in with him. It doesn’t matter how he came into my life. I’d like to think I’m a good judge of character, and that there’s no way he’s not being real with me. I’m falling hard, and I don’t care about the landing.
