Epilogue

Evie

When I was a little girl, dreaming of my wedding day, I was wearing the big, fluffy white dress and marrying a doctor. We would move out to the country where we would raise our babies. Three of them. Two boys and a girl. I’m sure I had names for them, but I can’t remember them now.

Oh, how dreams change.

My husband-to-be is no doctor. We’re not moving to the country, and my ivory dress clings to my body and pools around my feet. He wasn’t the man of my dreams, but he most certainly is now, regardless of the fact that he lives in most people’s nightmares.

“Does this mean Louis is my new dad?”

Tearing my eyes away from the mirror, I look down at my son, dressed in a smart suit, and tell him, “He’s going to be around for us for the rest of our lives. He loves us, he’ll protect us, and he’ll be a good dad to you. Are you okay with that?”

He’s been just as excited as me about the wedding, but with his one question, I’m nervous to hear if he’s really okay with this or not.

“I miss my real dad, but if I had to choose anyone in the world to be my new dad, I’d choose Louis.”

Swallowing the lump in my throat, I fight not to cry and ruin my make-up.

“I think Louis would be pleased to know you think so highly of him.”

I wasn’t expecting Louis Mitchell to come into my life. I had a lot to get used to, but it’s not so dauting when I think of how much Thomas and I affect him.

Thomas will be walking me up the aisle, and as I say “I do,” I’ll have both my guys with me. Louis compromised and said, as long as the reception is at the clubhouse, then he’ll marry me anywhere. I know he isn’t religious, but one thing from my childhood wedding dreams was getting married in a church. I think it’ll be good juju for us. It couldn’t hurt, anyway.

For once, I’m looking forward to the future, anticipating all the good to come, just by having Louis’s love.

The clock ticks over to 1:45 PM, and I collect my bouquet from the box on the kitchen table. Chaos pops his head in the doorway and smiles brightly.

“Evie, you look lovely. Psy’s not gonna know what hit him.”

I smile back. “Thank you.”

“Are you ready to leave?”

Nodding, I smile down at Thomas and take his hand. Chaos is driving us to the church, where Louis’s closest brothers will be joining us.

“Will I get a new sister or brother?” Thomas asks as we leave the house.

I can barely form a word, but Chaos fills the silence with his loud laughter.

“With the way you’ve changed my brother, I wouldn’t be surprised if knocking you up is next on his list,” he says over the car as Thomas climbs into the back seat.

Having a baby with Louis doesn’t make me nervous. It’s the next logical step in our lives.

Thomas is busy chatting away with Chaos, and I’m happy to sit and listen. I can barely remember the days when it was just the two of us, and now we’re surrounded by people who care about us, and only want the best for us.

The church comes into view, but no nerves descend. Louis is waiting for me, and I can’t wait to be Evie Mitchell.

I don’t know whether it’s fortunate or unfortunate that my mother refused to attend today. The day Louis officially moved in was the day she disowned me. Through her repulsion for my decision of choosing Louis, we arranged she would have Thomas for one weekend of the month. Just because my relationship with her is strained, it shouldn’t affect Thomas. I know she loves him, and he adores her, so she picks him up from school on her Friday, and drops him off on Monday morning. Thus, meaning we don’t have to see each other.

During those weekends, Louis and I go for long rides on his motorcycle, spend lots of time without our clothes on, and just enjoy being in love.

“Let’s get you in there before he comes looking for you,” Chaos says, pulling me out of my thoughts.

We all get out of the car, and Chaos disappears inside. Before I take this next step with Louis, I bend down to Thomas’s height and pinch his little cheek.

“You ready?”
