“I can see why that tuna can run a thousand a pound,” I say, regretting having gotten the hamburger now.

“It can go for more than that,” Rafe says as a security guard approaches him to let him know he has a call waiting.

Rafe hands me his bowl before getting up. “You can finish the tuna.”

I ditch my burger and take his bowl. As I eat, I notice the server stands near, ready to be at Rafe’s beck and call. Rafe gave the young man instructions about the burger in English. Maybe this was the opportunity I was looking for.

I gesture for him to come over.

CHAPTER TEN

“Iwant to give my complimentsto the chef,” I explain loudly in case Vladimir, who’s standing several yards away, tries to listen in. “The bluefin tuna is amazing, but tell me, what is this thing?”

“Crown melon,” the server answers. “They’re grown in Japan and sell for something like two hundred apiece.”

“Thank you.” I lower my voice. “Would you happen to have a phone on you?”

“Sorry, no.”

I take a nervous breath. “Would you call 9-1-1 for me?”

“Ma’am?”

“I’m being held here against my will,” I whisper. “Can you help me?”

“He can, but he won’t,” a voice behind me says.

I can feel myself growing pale. I don’t even want to turn around and look at him.

“James here is a member of theJing San,” Rafe elaborates.

My heart sinks.

“And if you’re wondering about Ms. Hsu, whom you saw earlier, she knows better than to betray me.”

“Is there anything else you need, ma’am?” asks James.
