I feel like I have no choice.

I need to dig further.

John grunts, muscles flexing as he shovels out the last of the manure.

"Well, we got the hay bales to move. Then there's the fence line that needs mending."

I nod, mind already racing.

"I can help with that. But first, do you mind if I use your phone?"

He raises an eyebrow. "Phone? Don't have one. Sorry."

I should have expected as much and now feel guilty for having doubted them.

No phones mean no chance of being tracked, and no way for them to have called anyone.

Despite my inhibitions, we're safe here.

"Alright then," I say, grinning from ear to ear.

Might as well run with the wind now.

"What next? I'm free all morning and wholly at your disposal."

"Eager chap, aren't you?" laughs John, leading me to the cow shed.

Chapter 13

Diana

Iwakeup,rubbingthe sleep from my eyes.

The bed beside me is empty and cold.

Where did Anthony go?

Has he ditched me and made a run for it?

Anxiety bubbles in my chest as I glance around the room.

My gaze lands on a folded note on the bedside table.

I snatch it up, my fingers trembling.

Diana,

Your husband is helping Jake with the morning chores. I'm downstairs, dearie.

-M

Relief floods through me, easing the tension in my shoulders.

Of course he's helping the old man.

Where else would he be?

I peer out the window and spot Anthony hauling bales of hay, his tanned, muscular arms flexing with each movement.
