I curl up on one end of the plush leather sofa while Anthony builds a fire, the crackling flames casting a warm glow over the space.

Anthony sits beside me, pulling out a book to read and passing one to me.

“The Don’s Unexpected Baby by Amber Row.” How fitting I thought.

I lie down, my feet on his lap, getting cozy.

“This is nice,” I say softly.

“Mmm.” Anthony mutters, turning a page.

“Being here with you, I can almost forget about everything waiting for us outside these walls.”

“I know what you mean.”

In this place, it’s easy to pretend we’re just two ordinary people in love, and not on the run from a dangerous hitman or that we were supposed to get married as an arrangement.

“Do you think we’ll ever be able to have a normal life together?”

“I don’t know,” Anthony says honestly.

“My father’s reach is long, and as long as he’s around, we’ll never truly be free. But having a normal life is worth fighting for, Diana. And when this is all over, I’m going to give you the life you deserve. If you want me in it.”

His words fill me with warmth and hope.

I tilt my head up, meeting his gaze.

“I was adamant on running away from you," I say.

"I was waiting for my father to die, and then leave. At times, I became so intent on hating you, that the idea of maybe enjoying a future together seemed impossible."

"And now?" he asks, hopefully.

"Now, I'm open to it. As long as it's safe for me," I say.

Though in my heart, what I mean is safe for the baby.

The truth is, if I wasn't pregnant, I might have not even bothered with keeping a distance.

If it was just him and I... I know I'd want to be with him.

But it's not just him and I anymore, and that changes the game.

Anthony’s expression softens.

“Safe," he mutters.

"I wouldn't want anything else for you."

I am engrossed in the book, and it calms my senses.

I've always loved reading because it's such an escape from reality.

I stifle a yawn, and turn the page.

“Are you hungry?” he asks.
