The fire has burned down to flickering pools of gold, casting a warm glow over Diana's skin.
"Hey," she says, giving me a naughty smile.
"Want to go for a midnight swim?"
"Are you serious?" I ask, looking at her with wide eyes.
"You're crazy. It's freezing out there!"
"We don't have to go all the way in. Just splash around our feet or something. Come on, Mr. I love to campout rebel."
"Okay," I say, jumping to my feet.
"This is now a matter of my honor."
"Uh-huh," she says, giving me a wink and running out of the door.
I follow, trying to catch her by the arm so we can be at pace with each other.
Diana pulls away, eyes sparkling with mischief as she slides off the dock into the water below.
I barely have time to react before she splashes me, soaking my shirt.
"Hey!" I protest, but I'm laughing. Diana grins up at me, treading water.
"Come on in, the water's perfect."
I shake my head at her antics, pulling my shirt over my head before easing myself into the lake.
The cool water is a shock to my system, but not unpleasant.
Diana swims closer, wrapping her arms around my neck.
"Got you," she says smugly.
"You little minx," I growl playfully, grabbing her around the waist.
She squeals as I duck us both under the water, coming up a second later breathless and laughing.
Diana pushes the wet hair out of her eyes, gazing up at me through thick lashes.
The moon reflects off the water droplets clinging to her skin, and I'm struck by her beauty all over again.
Suddenly, an eerie howl echoes out across the lake.
Diana's body goes stiff in my arms and I freeze, recognizing the sound immediately.
The call of a lone wolf, so close by that it must have been tracking us all this time...
"Quick, let's get inside," I murmur urgently, and we both make a mad dash for it.
We fumble with our clothes as we scramble up the dock steps, heart pounding in my chest as I pull her into the safety of our cabin just in time.
We collapse onto the couch in a fit of laughter, clutching our sides.
Adrenaline courses through my veins and I can feel Diana's heart beat racing against mine.
She looks up at me with shining eyes, pausing for a moment before leaning forward to press her lips softly against mine.
