And with my unique set of skills, I'm more than capable of uncovering the truth.

At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

What's the harm in digging a little further?

I stare at the screen, my breaths coming in short bursts as I dig deeper into my father's network.

I need to know more about David Atwell, this hitman who seemed to have turned against his own employer, my father.

My fingers fly across the keyboard, a skill that's become second nature to me, as I search for any piece of information that could help me understand.

I scan through emails, photographs, logistical operations, contracts.

Nothing.

Just when I'm about to give up, I run a face detector scan, pulling up all photos and videos with Atwell on it.

At last, something catches my eye.

A grainy video from one of the CCTVs in my father's office appears on the screen.

The timestamp indicates it was recorded a few years ago, and I can hardly believe my eyes as I recognize David Atwell standing across from my father, his posture tense and rigid.

I turn up the audio on the volume.

"Please," Atwell says, his voice strained, "I need to quit."

"Whatever for?" asks my father, a devil-may-care drawl to his voice.

I recognize it from my childhood.

It meant I'd never get what I asked for and right now, Atwell would get the same.

"I did what I did to survive. But now, I've found the love of a good woman. We're building a family. My wife, my kid... they deserve a better life. A normal life, away from all this crime and violence. I want to be there to watch my kid grow up. I don't want to die on this job, or in prison."

My father, ever the cold-hearted bastard, refuses to let him go.

"You knew what you were getting into, David," he sneers.

"You don't just walk away from the family."

But Atwell's resolve is strong.

"I made a mistake, but I won't drag my family down with me. I'm done."

With that, he turns on his heel and storms out of the room, leaving my father seething.

"Fine, you want to leave?!" my father shouts after him, his face contorted with rage.

"What would any of this be for when your wife and kid are dead? You'll pay for your betrayal!"

My heart hammers in my chest as the weight of this revelation sinks in.

Did my father threaten to kill Atwell's family?

Was it just a threat?

Was there more to it?
