Would she still look at me the same way if she were to learn that my own father had an innocent woman and child killed?

With a deep, shaky breath, I go from one room to another.

The silence weighs heavily upon me, pressing down on my chest like a leaden blanket.

I can't shake the feeling that something is terribly wrong.

"Diana!" My voice rings out, desperate and raw. "Where are you?"

There's no answer, only the oppressive silence mocking my panic.

I sprint through the halls, my heart hammering against my ribcage.

Every door I throw open reveals nothing but empty rooms, each one colder and more foreboding than the last.

When I reach her bedroom, my breath catches in my throat.

The bed is neatly made, its pristine surface marred only by a solitary piece of paper resting atop the silken sheets.

My hands tremble as I pick up the note, barely able to make out the elegant script through the haze of my mounting fear.

As my eyes scan the words, something inside me shatters.

"God, no."

The whispered exclamation slips past my lips, my knees buckling beneath me as the note falls from my grasp.

Chapter 21

Diana

Theneonlightsofthe gas station flicker on against the setting sun of the Montana sky, casting eerie shadows across the deserted parking lot.

My heart races in my chest as I pull Frankie's Toyota Corolla to a stop near the pumps.

Every light, sound and movement hits me like a solid rock being thrown in my direction.

For what I'm about to do is gnawing at my chest.

Once I go into this, there's no coming back.

"Okay, Diana, you can do this," I whisper to myself, gripping the steering wheel tightly.

I glance around to make sure no one has followed me.

Anthony would be furious if he knew I was going behind his back like this.

I keep praying he's still busy researching on the computer, and not following me to town.

If he notices me missing, he'd come looking, which is why I chose to drive a few towns over.

The station is eerily quiet, as if the world has stopped turning just for this moment.

My hands tremble as I step out of the car, adjusting the jacket I'd grabbed in haste from the cabin.

I had to be careful – very careful – not to tip off Anthony or anyone else who might be tailing us.

I couldn't risk putting him, or myself, and most importantly, my baby, in any more danger than we are already in.
