She doesn’t fucking answer.

“What’s Cyrus doing here?” There’s no possible way that Brabus could be anyone else’s. There’s averylimited supply of the luxury pickup circulating the planet and only one in Fox Hollow.

She shrugs her narrow shoulders, and says, “We didn’t trip anything, so I don’t know why he’s home early.”

“Home? Are you fucking crazy?”

Her face nearly exposed again, she shoots me a sideways glare.

“That’s not Cyrus’s home. I’ve seen where he lives. I’ve been in it. It’s a house.”

“Do you really think Cyrus would let just anybody know where he sleeps? The house you’re talking about is where he fucks, where he parties, where he lets others fuck and party. It’s where he makes everybody elsethinkhe lives, but it is not where he actually sleeps.” She points at the warehouse. “Thatis where he sleeps. That is where he keeps anything of real value to him.”

I want to rage at her but settle on running a hand through my sweaty hair instead as I grind out, “Why’d we just break into it?”

“I thought it was obvious. To rob him.”

Now I do yell. “What?”

“Torob—”

“I fucking heard what you said, Lex. I’m trying to figure out why the fuck you said it. Rob him? That’s a suicide mission.”

“It’s only suicide if you get caught, so next time when you—”

“I’m not robbing Cyrus motherfucking Andeno.”

“Yes, you are. You’re going to come back another time, alone, and you’re going to doexactlywhat we just did, then you’re going to take enough cash out of that safe to get you and your sisters and your mom out of here.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about Silvy’s. Your mom’s floral shop that should be bringing in good money but isn’t. After Breckyn left, I looked up who owns the building.”

Then she knows it’s Cyrus.

“That was the bet your dad lost, huh?”

My elbow on the door, I prop my head in my hand, then jerk out a nod. What the fuck did I get myself into?

“And he keeps you at his beck and call by threatening to put your sisters to work at The Playground?”

Lex pauses, waiting for me to give her some sort of response but I’m still reeling. I just broke into Cyrus Andeno’s “house,” with his daughter’s help. She used to live with him? Here? No wonder she thinks my place is comfortable, she grew up in a literal fucking warehouse.

“Reece, you wanted me to figure it out—”

“Whose fault is that? Huh, Lex? Maybe if you weren’t so fucking cold, you would’ve let me finish telling you myself, instead of firing my ass and kicking me out of your fucking life!” Spit flies out of my mouth at the last part because that’s what hurt the most. That’s what hurts the most. Even if… No, evenwhenI stop working at the Debrosse Group, I still want to be able to see Lex, but she tried taking that away from me.

Just like she’s trying right now.

“I’m…”

We stare at each other. Is she going to apologize?

Lex blinks first before tearing her gaze away.

Of course not. I’m such a fucking dumbass for thinking she might.

“That folder?”
