Since Tuesday, I’ve been cold to Reece, colder than normal, but it hasn’t lessened the heat in my belly when I remember our night together. My entire body is ablaze with longing, and not just for the physical part either, but for all of it. Reece listened, he watched, he pushed, he waited, he paid attention. He was selfless, intuitive, careful. He was everything I didn’t know could exist in one man. He was…perfect.

And for a split second, I felt like I was, too. My past, my future, everything outside of the present melted away, leaving only the two of us in our own stolen hiccup in time.

It’s that feeling alone I blame for my momentary lapse in judgement when I bought him something I had no business buying anyone, least of all Cyrus’s fox.

Tonight I have to face Reece in that same place and act like I have nothing for him. Not a gift and certainly not anything else. Anythingmore. Like feelings.

I’ve invited several Debrosse Group employees, including the Senior Leadership Team, for a dinner party to celebrate Kordin’s return. Kordin hasn’t let his laptop out of his sight since his release which makes tonight that much more important. Whether or not I can get my hands on it, as well as everything it contains, I have to leave a lasting impression on the SLT, so that by the time the night’s over, they believe I wholeheartedly love and trust my husband. Although we see these people on a daily basis, we’ve typically kept public displays of affection out of the workplace. They all know we’re married, there’s no need to rub their noses in it…until now.

I close the drawer, then lock it before getting up and slipping on my coat. Down the hall, past Kordin’s office, I give a single knock on the open door to Kaisin’s.

He looks up instantly, his murky blue eyes bulging. “Lenox? Uh… Everything okay?”

“I think so,” I say while strategically placing a breadcrumb by letting my tone implybut how could I really know?

I enter the room that’s somehow cooler than the rest of this floor, instinctively hugging my coat tighter against my body before rethinking it and letting it gape open.

Kaisin gives my form-fitting dress a once-over.

“That doesn’t sound very reassuring. Is something wrong?”

A couple exaggerated glimpses behind me, then I say vaguely, “It’s Kordin.”

Kaisin pushes to his feet, confusion in his features but silence on his tongue.

Even if Reece is right about Kaisin having feelings for me, he’d still have to know what Kordin’s up to in order to be useful. Sadly, it seems my brother-in-law, like most men, is purely ornamental.

“Can you give him a ride home for me? I need to leave early to let the caterers in.”

It’s going to be a four-course meal with a full bar. Since our formal dining room isn’t big enough, dinner will be held in our garage. Luckily, Kordin not only insists on keeping the inside spotless, but heated as well.

“Sure. Anything.”

Anything. That’s two members of the board who’ve promised they’d do anything for me.

“Thank you, Kaisin. Anything I can do to return the favor, let me know,” I say before pivoting away.

“Before you go…”

I look back.

“Is there, uh… This is kind of delicate, I guess, but is there somebody you’ve been seeing? You know, lately.”

“Excuse me?” I ask with the most incredulous tone I can muster, prepared to deny anything and everything to the absolute death.

“Like a therapist.”

A therapist?

“You said you were fine, but um… Maybe you weren’t?”

Is he referring to The Pen when I left early?

I decide to stick to the story I gave Phil in case he is.

“It’s honestly quite embarrassing to admit but I think I underestimated how challenging this whole ordeal would be. It’s such a relief to have Kordin back home and on the mend.”

“Yeah. Of course.” He waves a hand at me. “You seem much more yourself this week. That’s why I thought maybe you were getting some help.”
