With a sigh, he pushes on my back, saying, “Give me a towel.”

I stand, then hand him one from the heated drying rack. Seeing the mess my hair is now, I try in vain to fix it by tousling the strands, then throw the top over to one side, giving it a deep side-part instead of the middle-part I styled it for.

“You’re better off putting it up so it doesn’t get in your mouth,” I hear, and freeze.

My mouth?

Kordin drops his gaze to the spot in front of him.

“You want me to blow you?”

“You’re not leaving me with any other options.”

I eye the towel. “Is that for my knees?”

Shifting in his wheelchair, he dabs at his forehead and says, “I better hang on to it. The withdrawal from the painkillers has been making me perspire more than usual.”

He’s lying. The towel’s to cover my head.

I don’t think there’s a word to describe what this feels like, to know your very presence disgusts someone. Agony, degradation, anguish—none of them do this feeling inside me justice.

The doorbell chimes out in the foyer.

“Rain check?” I offer half-heartedly.

After a long stare-off that neither of us blinks during, Kordin gives a solitary nod, excusing me.

As soon as I’m out of the bathroom, I hear him mutter, “Not with you.” Instead of that internal scream boiling in the pit of my stomach, I feel a laugh bubbling up.

Now that getting even is a possibility, I’m done getting angry.

Lex opens the door, and for a second, I forget how to breathe. Hair the color of Daisy petals falls in loose waves with a deep part from one side, like she flipped it over her head roughly while riding some dick.

She did that exact move while riding mine without even breaking pace and it was fucking hot.

The tight black dress molded to her body leaves absolutely nothing to my overactive imagination. The things I could do to her in it…

The things I could do to heroutof it.

“Mr. Souza, glad you could make it. Any trouble finding the house?”

I hold in a chuckle. “None.”

She looks like she’s fighting a smile of her own as she says, “Good,” before inviting me in and closing the door.

“You look…” I drag my hand across her stomach when we revolve around each other. “Incredible,” I whisper, then give her the pot containing three bulbs of newly bloomed yellow Hyacinth. “These are for you.”

Taking it, she examines the flowers with furrowed brows. I don’t always tell her what the flowers mean, but these ones I need her to know.

“They’re a sign of jealousy.”

Her eyes lift to mine. Despite the brightness of the room, it’s hard to make out their color. I’ve witnessed them in three distinct shades now—green, blue, and silver, as well as different combinations of the three—and still don’t understand what amount of lighting determines which color.

“You were right,” I say before dropping my voice to a whisper again to admit, “it’s fucking killing me.” Turns out jealousy will be the death of me, and soon if something doesn’t change. Last night I broke in here again just to see Lex. She was asleep and I wore a brand-new outfit without any identifiable scents on it, so she wouldn’t sense me, but I was here with her…and Kordin. It took everything in me not to smother him and let Lex think sleep apnea widowed her. Unfortunately, I didn’t. Couldn’t. Not yet. I need to see this thing through first.

Kordin hasn’t taken any steps to protect his wife after my break-in, but he has secured his laptop. He must be storing it in his safe now because I wasn’t able to find that thing anywhere. His priorities and mine couldn’t be more different.
