“So it was anticipation?” Lex questions softly.

Anticipation?

“The Anemone?” I ask, and she nods.

Now I’m the one wearing a confused look. She wasn’t sure? Any one flower can have several different meanings, sometimes on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum, so it’s all in the intention they’re given with. White Anemones can also have a hopeless connotation. Is that how she thought I meant this morning’s?

“It was anticipation,” I tell her. She can say the other night was all she’s willing to give but I never agreed that’s all I’m planning to take.

“Keep that out of view.” She bows her head at my left hand.

“This?” I flip my palm over, showing her it’s completely empty.

“Uh-huh. Will you find me later?”

Later when?

Lex’s nostrils suddenly flare, then she makes a show of inhaling the Hyacinth before saying loudly, “They smell like spring.”

A second later, the distinct sound of wheels rolling over flooring hits my ears, so I whisper, “I’ll find you.” Nothing could stop me.

Anything she asks for, I’ll give her.

Holding the pot out to the side, she turns around.

I stick my left hand in my pocket as I follow after her.

Pretending to just notice her husband stationed at the entrance to the hallway, she pulls up short, saying, “Oh, Kordin, look what Mr. Souza brought us.”

She goes over to stand next to him, showing him the yellow flowers.

“Hydrangeas. Same as the ones we have out front.” Kordin grins up at his wife fondly, his hand settling on the swell of her ass.

Chaos erupts inside me, and I actually take a step forward before I know what I’m doing.

Lex moves away from Kordin, only a couple inches, but enough to make his hand fall away. The second he’s no longer touching her, my internal temperature plunges back to somewhere closer to normal.

I still don’t like him being near her.

She angles her body to address him. “The big bushes with purple flowers?”

“Yes. Gorgeous in the summer, aren’t they?”

Lex eyes the Hyacinth. “They are…but I don’t remember them looking like these.”

“They’re the same flower, just a different color.”

“They’re not the same at all,” I interrupt to correct. “They’re two different flowers from two different families.”

Kordin redirects his narrowed eyes from his wife to me.

“The plants you have outside are Hydrangeas, shrubs from the Hydrangea family.” There’s another name, too, but it’s hard to pronounce and Kordin wouldn’t understand anyway, so I save my time, only telling him, “Those are Hyacinth,” while pointing at the pot. “An herb belonging to the Hyacinth family.”Two completely different families, dumbfuck.

Kordin looks like he just got punched in the stomach, and since I actually did punch him in the stomach before, I know. He’s pissed. Kordin Debrosse doesn’t likeanyonegettinganythingover on him.

“Where’s Mrs. Souza this evening? I was looking forward to meeting her.”

Now’s his shot at offense, putting me in the hot seat.
