“A gusset?” I echo, glancing up at her.

“It makes a little pocket, not exactly big enough to hold anything…normally.”

A pocket. Okay. So she’s got something stored in there. It doesn’t sound like a bell.

It better not be a lock. She knows I’d just pick that shit anyway.

I dip a finger in and scoop out whatever’s in Lex’s secret pocket before dropping it in my other hand. A ring sits in the middle of my palm. A matte-black ring. It’s not dainty enough to be a woman’s ring. It’s thick and looks like a—

“It’s a wedding band, rookie.” Lex fingers a piece of my hair. “Your wedding band.”

The outside is plain, smooth and black, nothing fancy whatsoever. But the inside has some sort of engraving. Twisting it at all different angles, I finally make out flowers—simple with only five slim petals each—but I can’t tell what type they are.

“What kind?”

Her voice takes on a softness I’ve never heard her use. “Lemon Blossoms.”

Lemon Blossoms are a promise to be faithful.

This is the first gift I’ve ever received from someone outside of my family and it’s not just that the piece of jewelry is something I’d pick out for myself, it’s the deep significance tied to it. It’s a fucking vow of loyalty. It hasn’t escaped my notice that every time I tell Lex not to fuck her husband, or anyone else, that she doesn’t comply verbally. Or if she does, it’s more performance than genuine cooperation.

This though, this fucking says more than words ever could. There’s a quote on the wall at Silvy’s. It’s from one of Tennessee Williams’s plays, and eventually, it became his epitaph. “The violets in the mountains have broken the rocks.” I’ve seen it for years but never really understood its depth until this moment. Sometimes the smallest flower, the smallest gesture, can have the biggest impact.

My throat gets clogged when I try to thank her, making me have to clear it a couple times first.

“Don’t make this into something,” Lex cuts me off. “It’s just to shut Kordin up. That’s it.”

She had theinsideof my fake wedding ring custom-engraved for…appearances.

Right. It doesn’t mean anything.

Just like the flowers and books I handpick specifically for her every day. No meaning at all.

“How’d you know I’d find it?” She could’ve been walking around all night with this ring tucked against her pussy. That’s best-case scenario because it could’ve easily fallen out at some point. That useless pouch wasn’t very deep or tight.

“Because I asked you to.”

She asked me to find her, not her pussy.

But she knew I’d come looking for both.

I smirk. She’s finally starting to understand me.

I try putting it on, but the skin around my knuckle bunches up, preventing it from moving any further.

Lex takes it from me. “Do you remember the story about Kordin’s wedding band?”

Remember it? I haven’t been able to get it out of my fucking head.

“Yeah,” I say, wishing she hadn’t just used that asshole’s name.

Lex sticks the hand with my ring up her dress before pulling it back out, no ring in sight.

“Replace the memory.” Her gentle caress at my hairline turns rough as she grabs hold.

Fuck, that hurts.

My cock digging into my jeans hurts worse though. I’mthathard right now.
