I jog back out to my car and grab one of the tracking devices I keep on hand. Back inside, I link it to my phone before ripping a small section of the suitcase’s interior stitching and tucking it in between the layers of material. Before I can close the lid, a hint of blue among all the black catches my eye, and lifting the flap higher, I find a vibrator sitting on top of her clothing. She won’t be needing that anymore.

I return the silicone curved wand to her pleasure chest of a drawer.

After zipping the suitcase closed again, I stand it up, exactly where it was, then head back to the kitchen before leaving.

I gotta prepare for the biggest job of my life.

With a couple smaller ones beforehand.

Lex

“Mrs. Debrosse?”

I stop to regard the hotel receptionist, pulling my robe’s belt a little tighter around my torso.

“Yes?”

Coming around from behind the front desk, she glances around nervously all the way up until she’s within a couple feet of me. I prepare myself for whatever news she’s about to break to me.

“I’m sorry to disturb you, but the vehicle you noted at check-in…” She holds up the paperwork I filled out when I first got here. “The black Range Rover with New York license plate—”

“Yes, that’s mine.”

The woman looks thoroughly chastised, making me instantly regret my snippy tone. I’m in a robe, with hardly anything on underneath, while standing in the middle of the lobby. I just want to go for a swim.

“Sorry. I’m…cold.” Cold as snow. Ask Reece.

My chest aches at the thought of him.

The receptionist’s head dips. “My apologies, ma’am.”

“No need to apologize. Just, um, my car…is something wrong with it?”

“We’ve had multiple noise complaints regarding it.”

“What kind of noise complaints?” I didn’t have my music up when I arrived and it’s been parked for hours.

She points at the front revolving door where I can make out a faint repetitive siren now that I’m listening for it.

“The alarm. It keeps going off.”

I release a sigh and look back at the door leading to the stairwell I just came out of. The only thing I brought down with me is my keycard.

“I’m so sorry.”

“It’s okay,” I say, facing her again with a shake of my head. “I’ll handle it.”

I forgo the three flights of stairs and take the elevator back up to my room to grab my keys. I don’t know what would be setting off the alarm.

The entire way out to the parking lot, I push every button on the key fob, none of them stop—

A bag goes over my head before getting cinched at my neck, obscuring the outside world, then somebody lifts me clear off my feet.

Oh, shit. Not again.

I never should’ve been distracted while walking in the dark.

Any sound that escapes my mouth before a hand covers it is masked by my car’s siren blaring next to me. To us.
