“Letting me go.” He scoffs. “No, it wasn’t like that. Kordin and I took the elevator down together and—”

“Down where? You mean he went somewhere?” Aside from the two times I’ve left the office early and needed Kaisin to help out—the night of our dinner party and tonight—I’ve been Kordin’s only means of transportation. When I left earlier, Kordin was still in his office working.

“I don’t know if he stuck around or not after his eye appointment.”

Why didn’t Kordin tell me he had an appointment today? Maybe because I didn’t have to drive him?

Or because he’s fucking one of the staff members.

“There’s an optometrist in the building?”

Reece gives me a weird look before saying, “Apparently. Summit Enhancements. Before he got off on the sixth floor, he told me you were going out of town. I saw my shot, so I took it.”

My mind is being pulled in too many different directions right now, but did Reece really just say “I saw my shot” forabductingme? Like it was a forgone conclusion?

“Your shot for what?”

“To spend time with you. You, Lex, not Lenox Debrosse, or Lexi Andeno, or whoever you think you should be or need to be. I want to spend a weekend with you, but you were never going to let yourself give me one. So I’m doing what I do best. I’m fucking stealing it.”

I open my mouth to say something, but nothing comes out the first try. The second attempt my voice is croaky and mortifying. “I can’t give you what you want.”

His hand on the shifter freezes, and looking over his shoulder at me, he says, “You know what I want from you? For you to breathe. That’s all I need you to do this weekend. That’s all I need you to do ever. Just fucking exist, Lex.”

It takes me even longer to form words this time. Finally, I whisper, “Dishonesty and betrayal.”

But the sly fox hears and grins.

“I’ve already proved that’s not all I’m capable of, but in case you need more proof…” He shifts into Drive and pulls back on to the dark, deserted road. “…in one of the bags behind your seat, there’s clothes that’ll fit you.”

Peeking in the back, I spot several duffle bags and a couple totes.

“Other men have tried to dress me up like a doll, too.”

“No, other men tried to dress you up liketheirdoll, which didn’t work out…because you’re mine.”

I ignore what that statement does to my pussy.

“And how exactly am I supposed to get dressed if I’m tied up?”

“In another one of the bags, there’s a pair of wire cutters.”

I’m already scaling the backseat, the robe’s train slithering after me like a snake’s obedient tail. Once I have a weapon, escaping will be much easier.

Riffling through bag after bag, every article of clothing I come across is black, so it’s a little hard to tell what gender or size each one is in the dark, but what’s not hard to tell is none of them are small and triangle-shaped.

Still searching, I say, “You forgot underwear.” I can’t even make out any pairs for Reece.

“I didn’t forget.”

The energy in the car changes and I stop to glance at the front. With Reece focused on the road ahead, I study the side of his face. He’s classically handsome, the way old movie stars were, yet has tattoos and muscles like modern-day gangsters do.

Before I can look away, his eyes lock on to mine in the rearview mirror.

“You’re exhausting,” I tell him because I honestly don’t know what else to say. I do not want to trust him but he makes me believe that maybe someday I could.

“You don’t know exhaustion yet, Snow.”

I make myself return to the task at hand, saying, “I thought all I’d have to do is breathe.”
