Of course he did. He’s Reece.

“I hope she likes all these flowers you keep giving her.”

Reece eyes me, and I bow my head.

“She does.”

“That’s something,” Reece’s mom murmurs like she’s preoccupied.

“Everything okay?”

“Oh, Mrs. Edwards, you remember her? Well, her cat attacked her last night after picking up her weekly order.”

“Did she ask for Eucalyptus in it?”

“Yes. I feel terrible, but she never mentioned having a cat. All this time she’s been coming and she never said anything.”

“Eucalyptus smells like cat piss,” Reece explains to me quietly.

“Anyway, tell me what’s going on with you. Anything new?”

“No, nothing new.”

“There never is. I don’t know why I even ask.”

I divert my attention to a passing server holding a tray of steaming teas and sugar-dusted crepes.

Reece keeps the ugly parts of his life from his family. He’s their protector just like I am for mine.

Whatever it takes.

“Ask Reece about the chocolate,” someone in the background says.

“Here. You do it,” Gwen says before there’s a shuffling sound.

“Did the chocolate work?”

“Breck,” Reece mouths to me, then to his sister, “It wasn’t that.”

“Chocolate?” I mouth as well.

Leaning back, Reece reaches into his front pocket and pulls out a square piece of chocolate wrapped in shiny packaging. “They gave me chocolate for you.”

“For me?”

“For your PMS. During her shadowing with you, Breck picked up on some of the same things I did.”

His family was concerned about me, about my health? They had a conversation about it? And Reece has been carrying chocolate around on him ever since? Chocolate they gave him. For me.

“Why didn’t you try it?”

“Because I found a better way to combat your mood swings.”

What way?

His words before we left the cabin come back to me.“Works every time.”Sex is the better way?

If it’s between chocolate and sex, of course I’m going to choose the latter.
