“I won’t,” I promise, not for his sake or mine, but for hers. Only fucking hers. Goddamn it, how did we get to this? Everything was perfect—fuckingperfect—when Lex and I went to sleep. Now it’s all shit.

Cyrus points his cane at me. “Any harm she inflicts on herself will be replicated on your mother.” His aim shifts to Lex. “Then yours. Don’t think that mediocre security system you have on that white-and-blue Cape with the window boxes will keep me away from Yetta.”

Lex doesn’t react in any way whatsoever.

With a sinister smile, he says, “Tomorrow night. Midnight. The Playground. See you then.”

We hold our positions until we hear the footsteps outside recede, then fade completely, an engine in the distance starting up before fading away as well.

Lex springs from the bed to pace beside it, naked, with my gun still in her hold.

“You fucked meagain.”

Fuckedher? Is she serious? We’re both fucked.

“How’d you know he was here?” I ask, making her stop and acknowledge me directly.

“You know how, fox.”

I try not to balk at the insult. It’s true, but not entirely.

So she smelled Cyrus. That doesn’t explain…anything else. Why was that my first fucking question?

I’m losing my mind. I’m losing…everything.

I can’t lose everything.

I can’t lose anything.

First thing’s first. I gotta make sure we’re alone.

“I need to do a sweep outside.”

“How’d he know we were here?”

I’ve been asking myself that this whole time and still have zero theories. It couldn’t have been the kiss, could it?

“I don’t know.” I shake my head and get up from the bed.

Lex raises the gun, tracking my every move.

“Don’t do that,” I warn while slowly sliding my legs into my sweatpants. She’s not gonna shoot me, otherwise she would’ve let Cyrus.

“Don’t do what?”

“Lock me out.”

Lowering the gun, she passes it off to me handle first, and says, “Too late.”

Reece

Inod, my tongue running between my teeth and my bottom lip.

I wish she would’ve shot me. I’d be in a hell of a lot less pain.

Glock in hand, I storm from the room, shove on my boots, then burst out the front door.

The icy flakes hitting my skin dissolve on contact, the chill not even registering as I check the cabin’s perimeter and surrounding area.
