My mouth mimics his, warm blood oozing out between my stretched lips.

His expression morphs to one I’ve never seen him wear before, and his grip on my thigh tightens painfully. Despite his hold, I press the tip of my stiletto to the shoulder of the woman sucking him off and kick, causing her to release his cock with a gasp.

Instantly, she scuttles backward like a crab.

Cyrus chokes up on his cane, preparing to use it, but with his focus still on my mouth, I manage to bring his own gun up, the tip just behind his temple, and pull the trigger, sending brains out the other side of his head before he can so much as get a single swing in. Blood and chunks spray from both holes as his body slumps, his smarmy face drooping into eternal oblivion.

He’s dead. The terror of my life, of Reece’s life, of Fox Hollow is dead.

I could’ve killed him at the warehouse, in his sleep, but I wanted this moment to mean something. I wanted his last thoughts on this earth to be filled with fear, treachery, confusion, and above all, the knowledge that it was me who robbed him of everything—even his pleasure—just like he did to me as well as so many others.

My nose stings from the overwhelming smell of burnt flesh.

“That…” A voice pulls my attention away from the husk Cyrus Andeno now is, reminding me I’m not alone, and I look over to see Cia gaping up at me from the floor. “…was poetic.”

For a second longer than I should, I consider turning the gun on her and shooting her, too. Not for what she just witnessed but for going out on a date with Reece.

Remembering my purpose, I rein it back in before I can.

I have Reece Souza to thank for that new emotion. I was never a jealous person…until I met him.

Is this how he feels all the time? His entire genetic makeup hijacked and contorted by jealousy?

“Sorry about the kick.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ve endured worse…” She doesn’t finish that thought, nor does she need to because I’m well-acquainted with what she’s been through. Cyrus abused my body in all different ways as well, not all of them sexual.

The door swings open to Promise already clapping.

“Congratulations, Lexi. You just gave me my first O in Lost and Found.”

“First and last,” I tell her before wiping the gun’s handle down and fitting it in Cyrus’s limp hand. “It’s over.”

Her elation dies quicker than her former boss just did. “Until the next one comes along.”

Cyrus Andeno was the main plague on this town but every virus mutates.

Fortunately, variants are mere branches, and I just chopped down the entire fucking tree.

There doesn’t have to be a next one.

Rubbing my mouth with my sleeve as I push to my feet, I ask, “Have either of you ever heard of a matriarchal society?”

“No.”

“Never. What is it?”

“It’s where females are in charge,” I tell them.

Promise gives an incredulous laugh. “Like that’d ever happen.”

“It does happen. There are several matriarchal communities around the world. In animals, too. Orcas do it.”

“Aren’t those like killer whales?” Cia questions.

“Same animal, just different names.”Like me.

I think about that for a moment.
