Back in my pajamas, I’m walking into my house when a hand latches on to my wrist, tugging me downward so I’m face to face with…Kordin?

“Kordin, what’s wrong—”

“Where the fuck have you been?”

“My mother’s. She called me, upset about a—”

He smacks me in the jaw with his cast, the abrasive plaster breaking my skin and causing an intense burning sensation.

The shock that Kordin just hit me stuns me into paralysis.

Kordin Debrosse hit me.

Tonight I murdered the most feared fox in all of Fox Hollow, and I just got slapped by a hollow in a cast. Two casts.

“Who is he?” he seethes.

Twisting my wrist out of his hold, his nails leave a myriad of scratches behind.

“Who’s who?”

Dragging his wheelchair forward with his foot, he corners me against the wall. “The man you spent the weekend with.”

“Excuse me? I didn’t—”

He raises his arm in the cast and my reaction is instant. Instead of blocking, or preparing a counter blow, all I do is double over, cradling my midsection.

Still poised to strike, Kordin uses his left hand to snatch a paper off his lap and push it in my face. I assume it’s going to be one of his forged work orders, but it’s a receipt from the resort in the Catskills. One suite for two nights, charged to his credit card.

“I don’t understand. This is exactly where I was. All weekend long.”

“What did you eat while you were there? Not one single charge for food or beverage?”

He’s never inspected my expenses this closely. Or if he has, he’s never confronted me about them.

Because I’ve never given him a reason to before.

“Their selection was limited, so I went out for meals.”

“There’s nothing on the card.”

I shrug. “I paid cash.”

“Where are those receipts?”

“I’d have to check my bag.”

“I already took the liberty.”

I have to steady my breathing as I consider my next move.

When Kordin’s out of answers, he always reverts to his favorite method of evasion—gaslighting. I decide to use one of man’s top go-to lines when dealing with women, telling him, “You’re acting crazy.”

“How about the spa? What services did you have done?”

Before I can even try to lie, he swats the receipt from my hands, shouting, “You didn’t!”

“I spent most of my time in the pool.”
