“Take a seat,” I beg through unmoving lips, praying that he listens.

Reece doesn’t move an inch, just asks, “You’re pregnant?”

“My husband and I—”

“Didn’t do that.” Reece points at the positive test, then motions between us, his custom band still on his ring finger. “We did.”

At the last minute, something pulls Kordin’s focus further down the hall, and he changes direction, heading that way instead.

The elevators.

“Um, you know, Mr. Souza? If you were to take the stairs, you might be able to avoid anyone coming up the elevator, and you could even make use of those window boxes yourself. Move somewhere remote, without any people around.”

“Snow?”

“You would have to leave now though. Right now.” Swiveling my head, I keep my eyes locked on Kordin until he disappears out of my line of vision. They’re here.

Are they here? Who exactly are “they”?

“Reece, go.”

“You got my baby in you?”

Through gritted teeth, I tell him, “Kordin’s. I have Kordin’s baby in me.”

“Stop lying.”

I wish I could.

“Does he know? Is that why he hit you?”

“I was in a fucking car wreck,” I snap.

Reece slams his hands on my desk, making me jump.

“I’m going to fucking prison! Tell me thetruth!”

“The truth is…”

A man in uniform slowly comes into view before spinning around to laugh at someone behind him, his behavior telling…and terrifying.

If I tell Reece the actual truth, he’s going to go ballistic on Kordin the second that door opens, and Kordin won’t need to call his friend because Chief Hull’s already here.

My heart’s never beat faster or louder as I look back at Reece.

“I also robbed Cyrus last night. After you.”

His face takes on more shadows than he walked in here with. “For…us?”

Shaking my head, I click my tongue.

“No, no, no. Don’t do that.”

“There is no us, rookie. There never was.”

“Lex, don’t do that shit.”

I have to.
