“Why do you think we don’t have an alarm on our house?”

“Because your husband’s a cocky hollow—”

“Security systems track everything. The alarm being activated, the alarm being deactivated. Doors opening, doors closing. Same with windows. Every time Kordin would sneak out of the house, or even go into another room if we used sensors, there’d be a notification. There’d be a trail.”

Reece looks at me blankly.

“Of evidence.”

Still nothing.

“That can be used in court.”

“For?”

“How long have you been working here?”

“Six years. Why?”

“Because in the eight years I’ve been gone, it appears Cyrus has resorted to scraping the bottom of the barrel to find employees.”

“Fuck you.” He goes quiet for a minute, mulling over everything I said. “Gone from where? You still live in Fox Hollow.”

I remain silent, wandering through eyes as dark as shadows.

“You used to dance here?”

I scoff.Dance.He and I both know The Playground girls do a lot more than dance. We’re in one of the rooms that proves it. Private dances do happen back here, but they rarely stay dances.

Lowering his voice, he asks, “How’d you get out?”

“The only way there is. I paid.”

“By marrying a rich hollow,” he spits like an accusation that I don’t take offense to in the slightest. Correcting other people’s opinions on my life is not worth the energy, so I don’t even try.

“I married Kordin for his money and now I’m going to divorce him for the same reason.” The lies flow off my tongue like warm honey.

The truth is it was never about the money and always about freedom. Not even mine, but hers. Eight years ago I was willing to do whatever it took to ensure her freedom, her safety, and tying my life to Kordin Debrosse’s seemed like the lesser of two evils. At the time, maybe it was. But unfortunately, it’s not anymore, and paying to get out is no longer an option.

Money dictates the poor, but secrets rule the rich. If I’m right and Kordin’s laptop holds enough secrets to sink a cargo ship, then I need it without him having any idea I’m the one who took it.

“Because he cheats on you?”

I give Reece a slow nod. He seems really hung up on Kordin’s cheating. If I had to guess, it’s because he got his heart broken by someone that cheated on him. I heard heartbreak packs a nasty one-two.

Heard, because I’ve never experienced it myself. The heart can’t be trusted and neither can anyone in this town.

“His laptop has the proof you need?”

“Yes.”

Kordin’s failure to keep his dick in his pants is not why, after all these years, I came back to this hellhole and trusted the devil himself with stealing my husband’s laptop for me under the guise of a common burglary. The reality of the situation is much, much more complicated than a gold-digging wife looking for any reason to take her wealthy husband to the cleaners.

But I can’t tell Reece the truth. I can’t tell anyone the truth.

My plan was to pay an old contact to get the data off the hard drive but Kordin made me help him lock the entire laptop in his safe before calling an ambulance, and I can’t get in there. Nobody but Kordin can.

I take another grounding inhale, and shut my eyes, whispering, “You fucked me.”
