We will be unstoppable.

“We’re fuckingallthe men.”

Reece

Through a kitchen window, I spy a keypad on the wall, all of its lights green. She put in a security system, but doesn’t even activate it at night? She doesn’t use drapes or blinds on the main-floor windows either, making the entire first floor of the house visible from the outside. She was born a fox, became a hollow, and in the two and a half years I’ve been gone, she’s now what?

Fucking cocky. Cockier than Kordin ever was.

This early May weather has a damp chill trying to creep in through my clothes, but I can’t feel anything other than white-hot adrenaline as I ease away from the house, the sound of nearby rushing water behind me in the woods somewhere while I scan the entire backside for any new lights. Off, all of them. If it wasn’t for the quarter moon above, it’d be pitch black out here.

Every window on the second floor has blinds pulled down, so her bedroom must be up there.

That’s one. One single security measure she’s taken by not sleeping on the ground level.

Shit, Lex, I thought you were smarter than this.

Kneeling in front of the side door, I start picking the lock, the motions coming back to me like riding a bike. With each click of another tumbler, more adrenaline pumps through my body and I have to pause for a minute to calm my heart, steady my hands.

It’s been a long time since I heard that sound.

It’s been a long time since I saw Lex.

It’s been a long time since…everything.

I get the door unlocked, then twist the handle and let myself in.

Aside from another smaller house on the property that looked vacant, her other neighbors are too far away to see, or hear, anything, so I don’t worry about that as I make my way through the kitchen. This area isn’t Fox Hollow but it definitely isn’t the Catskills either. It’s somewhere in between.

I pass an island with a vase of blue Forget-me-nots and have to keep from snorting. Forget-me-nots? The symbol for loyalty, trust, and unwavering love? This bitch doesn’t know shit about any of those.

After doing a quick count in my head, I backtrack and pluck two stems out, crumbling the blooms in my palm. Odd numbers only, except thirteen.

I recount to make sure it’s actually eleven stems in there, then continue on.

On God, being a florist’s son has never been more of a pain in the ass than this moment.

Thinking of my mom makes me miss her and the twins and Silvy’s and—

No. Lex is first. She owes me an apology and I want to look in her face when she gives it. I went to prison for her. Fucking prison. Two and a half years of my life I’ll never get back.

The rest of the house blurs in my vision as I spot the stairs. At the top of them, there’s a blue glow coming from one of the rooms, so that’s where I head first. She must’ve brought the fish tank with her. It’s not set in the wall of the hallway like her last house, but it’s obviously still in the room. Her room.

I stop just before the threshold to pull in a breath.

Fuck. I can smell her from out here. When we were at that cabin, she told me what it was. Hand soap scented like whipped vanilla, amber woods, and iced Jasmine. The only kind she didn’t hate. Even after being without it for that entire weekend, I could still smell it on her. These past couple years my nights have been plagued by nightmares of vanilla icicles piercing my arms, stomach, face, everywhere but the back—where Lex actually stabbed me.

“Did you even shower before you came here?” I hear from inside the room and scoff.

Never caught off guard, always a raging bitch. She hasn’t changed a bit.

But I have.

I fill the doorway, letting her see just how much.

Curled up in an oversized chair in the far corner with a throw blanket draped over her lap is Lex, the woman I sacrificedeverythingfor. And she looks…amazing. Her hair’s still that white blonde, like Morning Glow Camellia, but she’s put on a little weight, giving her a healthier look, like she’s not constantly battling demons, both emotional and physical.

She wasn’t anxious. She was pregnant.
