I shoot her a glare, but she avoids my eyes completely. Two-faced bitch turned on me, which isn’t surprising, but Cia? That’s her family.

Just before I follow Cyrus into five Lost, Promise gives a subtle headshake from behind her paperback.

What’s that supposed to mean?

One scan of the empty room and I have my answer. Promise didn’t give up anyone.

Cyrus doesn’t know I met Lenox.

“Who gave you the mouse?” he asks, referring to my temple, before dropping down on the loveseat, his cane still in his grasp. “It looks new.”

Lenox’s advice runs through my throbbing head.Make yourself useful.Cyrus could kill me right now for not completing a job he sent me on. I have to convince him I can still finish it.

“Some drunk out front hassling one of the girls coming in for her shift.”

“One of my girls?” He sits forward, his knuckles white around his cane. “Right in front of my business?”

Cyrus will treat his employees like utter dog shit but nobody else gets to.

“I took care of it before anything could happen.”

“You took care of it?”

I nod, hoping to God he doesn’t ask which girl so he can check with her.

He lowers his chin along with his voice to ask, “You took care ofhim?”

I nod again.

There’s a long stretch of strained silence before he sits back. “Congratulations. You just bought yourself another day on this earth. Tell me why I should grant you any more than that.”

Fuck.

“I can still get the laptop for you,” I say, cutting to the chase.

Cyrus lifts a thick eyebrow. “You couldn’t get the laptop the first time.”

“The mark was awake, working on it when I got there. If I would’ve tried to take it from him, it would’ve looked suspicious.”

“You beat him pretty good, no? Why didn’t you take it then? You could’ve grabbed other valuables on the way out. That’d be far more forgivable than not taking anything at all.”

“That was my plan…until the wife woke up, screaming about calling the police.”

“The wife? You saw her?”

There’s something in his gaze, something unidentifiable, that keeps me from telling the truth. Is Lenox still his favorite?

I shake my head. “She was in another room.”

The corner of Cyrus’s mouth quirks. “Her bedroom?”

What should I say here? If I admit to knowing it was her bedroom, that’d mean I saw it, and her. If I say I don’t know, I’ll look like an amateur. Cyrus knows I’m not an amateur.

“Yes, her bedroom.”

“How do you know it was her bedroom?”

“I searched it before moving on.”
