“If that’s not enough, let me know and I’ll get you whatever you…” I meet Charlie’s eyes, Breckyn’s, then my mom’s. “…want.”

“It’s too late,” Charlie whispers. “Everything’ll be picked over by now.”

It’d be really fucking great if I had contacts in high places.

I do have one. Kind of. She wouldn’t help…would she?

I eye the flower on the counter.Maybe after a peace treaty.

Digging back into my meal, I tell the twins, “Let me worry about the clothes. You two figure out the rest. You’re going to homecoming.”

Smiles surround me, hesitant at first, then bigger and brighter, stretching the faces of my family into the best kind of happiness there is. I’ll do anything to keep them like this, even swallow my pride to ask the fakest person I’ve ever met for a favor.

Reece

Lex does a double take as I enter her office, then folds her hands on top of a file on her desk. The loose white curls framing her face do nothing to soften the deliberate suspicion in her icy blue eyes.

“Do you wear contacts?”

“No.”

“What color are your eyes?”

“Depends on the lighting. Why are you here?”

“Scott told me to report to you,” I say, name-dropping a random guy I met yesterday during my orientation. “Yesterday your eyes looked—”

“Listen, rookie. I don’t have the time, energy, or desire to deal with you right now. Whatever Cyrus is paying you to be here, I’ll double it for you to leave and never come back.”

“Cyrus isn’t paying me. I’m here on my own,” I lie, wondering if a small part of me isn’t lying.

“On your own? What does that mean? Like out of the goodness of your heart?”

“It means I fucked you over and I’m here to fix my mistake. Anyway, Scott said you’d want to know what I’m working on, so…”

One of her eyebrows lifts. “Considering you’re no longer employed here, I’m very interested to know what you’re working on.”

I ignore that because I don’t think she really wanted to fire me. If she did, she would’ve had me forcibly removed from the conference room…and now. Since she’s just watching me, I push my luck by taking a seat in one of the chairs across from her and give her a rundown of my tasks for the day.

Her eyebrow never levels back out as she listens to me drone on and on. I don’t actually have that many tasks and I have even fewer plans to do them, but I find myself wanting to see all of her reactions. Learn them, memorize them. She has to show parts of her real self sometime. I want to capture whatever I can while I can.

If she’ll fucking let me.

When I finish, she gives a drawled, “Riveting,” so sarcastic my lips quirk.

“As for what else I’m working on… I have a lead.”

“A lead?” she asks somehow even more sarcastically than before.

“Kaisin,” I say, zeroing in on her expression.

Surprisingly, she nods.

Unsurprisingly, she also sits forward and mocks, “Congratulations.” She even does a salute above her frown.

Fucking shit.

“Are we done? Or do you require even more of my time to waste?”
