I should be relieved he doesn’t kiss me anymore. Even willing and conscious, Kordin’s kisses were lackluster.

I peel the tape off Kordin’s eyelids, turn, and leave.

While my juicer works on extracting juice from the produce I just dropped in it, I flip over the book Reece gave me and read the back. With the embracing couple on the cover, it’s definitely a romance, but the word sweet in its description jumps out at me like an ax murderer in a thriller. The only thing in my life I like sweet is revenge. This book probably has less sex in it than my own life does.I should’ve left it in the trash.

My dinner of cold-pressed juice in hand, I pad over to the living room. On the coffee table, that king flower I also made the mistake of bringing home gives a much-needed pop of color to the room, breaking up the minimalist style Kordin prefers. It’s so big and so ugly. I don’t know what Reece was thinking buying it for me … Other than what he said.

A shapeshifter…

Instead of grabbing my laptop next to me and getting a head start on tomorrow’s workload, I bring my phone up to confirm if the story Reece gave me is true, not only about the flower but also the Greek god it’s supposedly named after.

An hour and a half later, the legend of Hera’s birth comes up in one of the many rabbit holes I have no choice but to follow at this point in my investigation, giving me an even better idea than the one I had earlier at the hospital. Tomorrow, Reece is getting averypersonal wedding gift.

“Are you ready?” Charlie asks from behind the dressing room’s curtain.

Next to me, Breckyn claps her hands, saying, “Yes,” just as enthusiastically as the first time we did this whole routine. And because people who shop regularly in this price point apparently can’t dress themselves, the saleslady comes out first, followed closely by my sister, wearing a shimmery gold dress with cutouts on the sides.

“Damn,” I breathe. Charlie doesn’t look like the same little girl that made me sleep on her and Breck’s floor every Halloween growing up because she was scared of costumes. She looks like a woman. A beautiful woman.

Standing from her spot on the sofa, Breckyn praises, “A vision.”

My mom comes in from the sales floor, arms loaded with other dresses. “I found some—” Her eyes widen at Charlie before clouding over with tears. “It’s perfect.”

“She’sperfect,” Breckyn stresses while circling her twin. “The dress doesn’t make the woman; the woman makes the dress.”

“Or suit,” I add, causing both sisters to grin my way.

“So this is the one?” Charlie asks with a hint of hesitation in her voice.

“Yes,” I say with none in mine.

“You didn’t even look at the price tag yet.”

“I don’t need to. Whatever it costs, it’s worth seeing the look on your face while you’re in it.”

“How do I look?” She spins to face the mirrors, inspecting her appearance from each angle.

“Happy.”

Our eyes meet in the reflection before hers shoot to our mom’s.

“You look very happy, Charlie,” she says in agreement.

Blushing, Charlie turns for the dressing room, mumbling, “Breck’s turn.”

“You’re sure you don’t want to at least try on a dress?” my mom asks Breckyn, arms still full.

Breckyn sends me an unsure look, so I give her a headshake and take over.

“Ma, she wants a pinstripe suit. She’s getting a fucking pinstripe suit.”

“Okay, okay. I just thought I’d check before I put all these back.”

“Allow me.” Another saleslady appears suddenly and takes the pile from my mom.

Lex not only gave me the address for her high-end clothing store connection, she must’ve called ahead and told them to shut the entire store down for me…and my fake fiancée, because that’s exactly what they did.
