Reece

Irotate the arm with Lex inward until I feel her chest graze mine, then I release the material to zip both pieces back together again. My right hand is covered in blood and won’t stop shaking, but I can’t tell if the shaking’s from fighting or being this close to Lex.

“Reece.” A look of pain flashes on Lex’s face before she whispers, “Go home to your fiancée.”

“Why?”

I stare into her eyes, full of her own lies and secrets and mysteries, hoping she reveals something more, something I can understand because a lot of the things she says and does, I don’t. I don’t understand why she worked at The Playground. I don’t understand why she married Kordin. I don’t understand why she’s still married to him. She deserves better than Cyrus, better than Kordin, better than Fox Hollow.

“I got this one,” I hear before a security guard hooks Lex’s elbow, hauling her out of my grasp and through the circle of onlookers.

I’m on their fucking heels, two more meatheads hot on mine.

Lex’s hand lifts to her bun, her fingers hastily tucking hairs back into place. Her hair. She’s fucking concerned about her hair right now.

The hollow life got to her more than she’d like to admit.

“Hey, where are you taking her?” I shout as soon as we enter a dark hallway with a neon-red exit sign above it. The long stretch of hall doesn’t have the same effects as the one from earlier, but with only a single sconce, it’s got just enough light to make out Lex being dragged along, her free hand up to her mouth now.

Both her and the man currently treating her like a motherfucking ragdoll ignore me.

“I said where the fuck are you taking her?” And why isn’t Lex demanding to know the same thing?

Catching me from behind, one pair of hands mashes the side of my face into the wall as the other jerks my arms behind my back.

“Now, now. Where do you think you’re going?”

My eyes never leave Lex. Why isn’t she putting up a fight? I know from personal experience she knows how.

“You have two choices. You can walk through that door, or we can drag you through it.”

There are only two doors, one off to the side and one at the very end with another exit sign above it.

“The door to the exit?” I breathe against the goddamn wall, making both men at my back chuckle.

“Nice try. The one to the office.”

“Then one to a squad car.” The other one laughs darkly.

Squad car? Fuck. Of all the shit I’ve pulled, a fucking bar fight is what’s gonna land me behind bars.

But what does that mean for Lex?

“What about her?”

“Her?” one of the assholes behind me echoes. “She gets the exit.”

“He’s letting her go?”

There’s a pause before one mumbles, “Eventually.”

At the end of the hall, the guard kicks the exit door open, then yanks Lex over the threshold. Before the door even gets the chance to shut all the way, I lose my fucking shit.

I stomp on one of the four feet behind me, only freeing my head when the motherfucker eases off my face. The fucker with my arms gets a head-butt as I thrash my body off the wall, then a backward kick to the nuts.

The face smasher comes at me again, but this time I’ve got my arms. I give an uppercut to his chest, making him stumble back, falling right on his ass.

Using the momentary break, I sprint down the hall, bursting out into the cold night air. It does nothing to cool my inflamed body as I take in my surroundings. Barbed wire tops a chain-link fence running the perimeter of an employee-only parking lot. It’s dark and deserted, making it a perfect place for the worst sins imaginable.
