Undeterred, he takes a seat across from me and places his usual offerings on my desk, this time instead of one flower, it’s a bunch and it’s in a…ring.
I narrow my eyes on it, breathing a sigh of relief that it’s a male wedding band.
“Shouldn’t you be wearing that?” I nod at the ring, then his naked ring finger.
“It’s not mine.”
“Whose…” My mind flickers back to Phil, who arrived wearing a cast on his left hand this morning. Apparently, after escorting me to my car Friday night, on his trek back to The Pen, he was attacked and mugged. The thief stole his wallet and wedding band before stomping on his hand and breaking it. “Phil.”
Reece smirks, causing me to release another sigh, this one audible.
“The flowers—”
“I don’t care.”
“—are white Heather, and they mean protection.”
The bunch looks like white Lavender but smells like Honeysuckle. Unlike the other flowers he’s given me, these will actually look good in my house.
“No one’s touching you anymore.”
I meet his black eyes, and without blinking, he adds, “Except me.”
Breaking the connection, I eye the book strategically hiding the white Heather.
“Before you ask—”
“I wasn’t going to.”
“—this one has lots of sex in it. Consensual sex. I can personally guarantee it.”
“How?”
Reece taps his lips like he’s thinking, before saying, “Missionary, cowgirl, a position called prone bone where the—”
“I meant how can you personally guarantee there’s consensual sex in it?”
“Because I read it myself.”
“You read it?”
He nods.
“The whole thing?”
Another nod.
“Do you read a lot?”
“Not since it was a requirement in school.”
“So, you just…felt like reading this one?”
“Not really.” He chuckles. “I wanted to make sure it met your standards.”
He read a book, a romance book, cover to cover, just to see if I’d like it. Seeing Reece read one of my books would be sexy. Hearing him read one would be even sexier.
The frown that overtakes my face hurts every muscle. If I don’t frown, I will do something stupid…like smile. Why does he have to make everything harder than it needs to be?
