“Who?”
Breckyn’s knowing scoff echoes throughout my car. “Your boss, Lenox.”
“Mm.”
“You didn’t notice?”
“I noticed she has a husband.”
“That’s right, the CEO… He seems mean.”
“Why? What’d Lenox tell you?”
“Nothing. I just overheard their phone conversation.”
“Breck.”
“I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, okay? It was hard not to when his voice was booming.”

“I can’t remember all of it. He talkeda lot. It was actually kinda cringe. He would go on and on saying really nice stuff to her, but then he’d follow it up with an order.”
“What kind of orders? For work?”
She thinks to herself for a second. “For everything. When I was listening to him talk, I just kept thinking of this one thing Charlie told me about. She said cult leaders will shower new members with attention and affection as a way to make them easier to manipulate. Technically, it’s abuse, but it’s… It’s disguised as love.”
I frown.
“So, anyway, just make sure you never ask for anything after you give her flowers.”
