I tug gently on her hair and her amber gaze flashes up to mine, but she continues her ministrations. Her bare breasts rub against my legs as she’s settled between them on her knees.

“Dolcezza, you need to stop. I’m about to blow and I can’t keep it from happening,” I say through gritted teeth as I try to hold back.

She merely grins as she keeps me in her mouth and catches every bit of my release. I’m breathless. Almost speechless. Damn, if it wasn’t the best wake-up call of my life.

She crawls up and straddles my hips so she can see my face. Her body is on display for me, each magnificent inch. She flashes me a satisfied smile and I can’t help but chuckle. “Proud of yourself, baby?”

“You had to know I’d return the favor from last night. And if you must know, yes, I am proud of myself because I surprised you,” she says.

I shift and sit up so I can prop against the headboard. I tuck a few loose strands of hair behind her ear and then let my hand rest on her cheek. “That was the stuff dreams are made of…literally.”

This time I get a blush from her. The slight pinkish color starts on her chest and works its way up her neck and to her cheeks. She tries to shy away from me by glancing down and crossing her arms over her chest. I gently pull her arms back down, then lightly grasp her chin with my finger and thumb, and tilt it up so she has to stare into my eyes.

“Don’t hide from me,dolcezza. You are still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on. Each scar, each freckle, and each imperfection is perfectly beautiful to me. You’re stunning,” I say as she holds me captive simply by existing.

“I don’t know what to say. I haven’t ever felt so connected to someone as I do you. You talk about dreams…I always dreamed we would get to be together this way. But being with you for real is better than any dream could ever be. You mean more to me than you know. And I get you want to take things slow, and I appreciate that so much, but, Hawk, I’ve never been more ready or sure of anything before. I want you and I need you in every way. I’m all in,” she says as she leans in to kiss my lips.

“Okay. As long as you know where we stand, and we’re not just using each other for pleasure,” I tell her.

She throws her head back and laughs. “Oh, Hawk. I’m using you for my pleasure all right, but more than that, I’m using you for love. I want to feel it in my heart and with my body.”

I kiss the tip of her nose before lifting her off my lap. I push her back on the bed and see her golden hair fanned out on my pillows. She puts her hands around my neck and stares at me with a soft smile. I kiss her lips. “Can I make love to you, dolcezza?I want to show you how you make me feel.”

She nods and pulls me to her for another kiss. I lose myself in her touch. Sure, I’ve been with other women, but not like this. Nothing has ever felt this way. I pull back and lean toward my nightstand and retrieve a condom and then roll it down my length.

I settle in between her legs as she opens them to allow room for me. “I think I fell a long time ago, baby,” I say quietly as I barely push inside.

A lone tear slides down her face into her hair. “So did I, Hawk. I think we’ve been free-falling for a long time, but now it would seem we’ve finally landed together.”

I smile and slide all the way in and hold still so she can adjust to me. I touch my forehead to hers. “Are you okay, baby?”

“Yes. I need you. Keep going,” she answers as she bites her lower lip. I keep most of my weight off her, but I know she feels me everywhere. I kiss her lips and thread my fingers through hers as we move, both joined to the other in the most intimate way. Our gazes stay locked as we rock our bodies back and forth into a place where nothing seems to exist but the two of us.

There are no outside forces waiting to separate us. But heaven help them if they try, because Brittney is finally mine, and I’m hers, and I’ll do anything to protect this second chance with her.

The rest of the weekend passed by mostly the same way. We were a tangle of arms and legs and sheets. We made love and held each other close in the afterglow. There’s not anything on her body I haven’t memorized. We talked about everything and nothing, although admittedly we didn’t talk about my time in Nashville. I know it’s coming. My past in Nashville could be the one thing to threaten what we have now.

When I had to leave her in my bed so I could go to work early this morning, I watched her in awe for a few moments before tearing myself away. What a difference a weekend can make! We went from thinking we hated one another to discovering it wasn’t hate at all—it’s love.

Neither of us has said those three little words. Most would say it’s too early, but not when you have the history we do. It’s almost as if we were a love story interrupted. A brief pause which allowed us to reconnect and pick up where we should’ve been headed all along…toward a life together.

As I pull into Valley B, my phone buzzes with a message from Wren.

Wren:I don’t want to alarm you, big brother, but I’ve noticed a blacked-out SUV that seems to keep popping up where I am. No one ever approaches me, and they stay far enough away to try to stay hidden, but I see them.

Me:Wren, don’t go anywhere alone, please. I think I know who it is.

Wren:Who?

Me:Someone from my time in Nashville. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of it, but please be careful, and whatever you do, don’t speak to anyone you don’t know. Remember how we trained.

Wren:I remember. I’ll be careful, but don’t worry, you’ve taught me well.

When I finally make my way to the stables to get the day started, I’m a ball of nerves. Gypsy and Whiskey nudge me when I let them out of their stalls. Then Tate strolls in with two cups of coffee in hand.

“Thanks,” I tell him.

His eyebrows furrow. “Everything all right?”
