Which brings me to why I’m standing in the shower right now. An unbreakable circle was formed the night we took our love-filled risk. My period is late, and I’ve felt…tired lately. When two pink lines showed up on the stick, I wasn’t sure whether to cry or laugh.

Hawk told me that night he was okay with whatever the outcome was because if he ever had kids, he wanted me to be their mother. I truly hope he meant those words and they weren’t spoken in the heat of the moment, because ready or not…it’ll be reality sooner than later. But if I’ve learned anything about Hawk Abbott, it’s he means what he says. He keeps his promises if they’re within his power. He’s rough around the edges with a golden heart he only shows to those who deserve to see it.

After about fifteen minutes under the spray, I’m wrapped in a towel and using another to squeeze the remaining water from my hair while still mulling over how and even when to tell Hawk he’s going to be a father for real this time when I hear the front door open.

I pad barefoot into the hall, and he meets me in seconds. “What’s wrong, baby?” he asks as he strides toward me and immediately pulls me into his strong arms. I breathe him in for a moment before pulling back.

“I need to tell you something, but I’m scared to,” I admit.

He pulls me to the bedroom and we both sit on the end of the bed. “You can tell me anything, dolcezza. You know that,” he says sweetly while rubbing my knuckles with his thumb.

“Maybe I should just show you,” I tell him. He peers at me with a raised brow but remains seated while I walk nervously into the bathroom and grab the test. I keep it behind my back and move to where I’m standing in front of him. “It looks like we’ll have another first and forever sooner than expected,” I say as my heart beats rapidly in my chest.

I pull the test out and show it to him. He stares at it for a moment before his gaze finds mine again. “Are you serious?” he asks with the most handsome grin on his face I think I’ve ever seen.

“Yeah, serious as can be. Our risk turned into a certainty,” I reply.

He loosens the towel sinched around me and leans down and kisses my stomach and then places a protective hand over it. “There’s nothing that would make me happier than having a baby with you. You’ll be such a wonderful mother,” he says with a little shimmer in his eyes.

I take his face in my hands and say, “You, Hawk, you’ll be the best daddy. Nothing would make me happier than to give you this baby.” His smile widens even as a tear rolls down his cheek. For once, I get to wipe one of his tears away and I’m relieved it’s tears of joy.

He stands and gently grips the nape of my neck and kisses my lips, leaving me breathless. Moments later we’re both naked on his bed joined together, making love well into the night. As I drift off to sleep in his arms sometime after midnight, I can’t recall a time I’ve ever felt happier or more at home.

Two months later…

“Is this what you think she’ll want?” Wren asks when I call to let her know my plans.

“She wants all my firsts, my lasts, and forever, Wren. Trust me…I know my girl,” I tell her. Calling her my girl won’t ever get old. She’s my girl, my love, my only, the mother of my unborn child, and hopefully my soon-to-be wife. Mydolcezzaand my home.

Wren helped me pick out the perfect ring and Briella helped pick out the floor-length white dress. Tate and Sterling helped me get a simple flower-covered arch and a few chairs set up with the rolling hills of Valley B as the backdrop.

Brittney thinks she’s working tonight, but I already told Zander my plans to propose and then marry her. He isn’t opening the bar, but she doesn’t know that yet.

I hang up and walk into the bar at one o’clock when she’s about to be due for her shift. Zander’s been nothing but happy for us once Brittney explained our story to him. He’s waiting for me when I walk in. “Hey, man, she’ll be in any minute now. The stage is ready,” he says.

Nerves hit me for the first time. It’s not necessarily I doubt she’ll say yes, but I hope I’m doing this right and making her happy. I must be transparent because Zander slaps me on the back and says, “Don’t worry, Hawk. You got this. She loves you. It’s time to get your happily ever after started.”

I chuckle. “Read romance books, Z?” I ask lightheartedly.

He scoffs. “Don’t knock it, Hawk. You might learn a thing or two. You better get up there. I’ll be discreet but try to get pictures for you,” he says.

“Thanks, man. I mean it.”

He nods and goes to get in position. Brittney told me he used to be a photographer. He did tons of weddings, but then he got his heart broken and gave it all up to run High Road Bar with his dad. I guess we all have our own sad story and I find myself grateful he’s stepping back behind a camera for us and also hoping he finds his forever like we have.

The lights are out when Brittney walks through the door. She can’t see me yet, but I’m on stage with her guitar standing behind a microphone.

“Hello? Zander? Gabby? Anyone here?” she asks as she walks further into the bar.

I strum the guitar and the stage lights illuminate me. She turns toward the stage with wide eyes as I start singing the song that I wrote for us. She smiles and covers her mouth as she moves closer, listening to each word I’m singing.

When the song finishes, I jump down and take her hands in mine. She’s a little teary-eyed. “I haven’t heard you sing since we were kids. You’re amazing. Did you write that?”

I press a kiss to her knuckles. “Yes, I did. You make me want to do all the things I forgot I could do. You make me a better man, Brittney. And that’s why I have a question for you.” I get down on one knee and peer up into the eyes that have called me home since the first moment I gazed into them.

“You see, I lied to you. There is one thing that would make me happier than having a baby with you. You would make me the happiest man alive if you would be my wife. I want to share all our first, all our lasts, and all of forever with you. I want you to have my last name. I want to chase all our dreams together. Will you marry me,dolcezza?”

She closes her eyes and smiles up at the ceiling before gazing back down at me. “Yes, Hawk. Of course, I’ll marry you.”
