I slip my ring on her finger and twirl her around before kissing her lips. I put her down and stare into her eyes.“Ti amo,Brittney. I love you,” I tell her. She flashes me her prettiest smile yet. “I love you too, Hawk, mytesoro,”she replies.

Zander comes into view with his camera. “Congratulations, guys!” he says.

“One more thing, baby. I want to marry you today if you’re up for it,” I tell her. She glances down at herself, but I stop whatever thoughts are about to swim through her head.

“It’s all set up at Valley B. Dress, cake, dance floor, judge. If you’re okay with it. If not, we’ll figure something else out. I just don’t want to wait one more day to call you mine,” I admit.

She takes my face in her hands. “I’ve always been yours. But yes. Let’s do it. I can’t wait.”

A few hours later, we’re exchanging vows in front of a small number of family and friends with Judge Davis officiating as the sun sets. Not quite a “midnight kiss” as Mamma calls it. But still, in a moment when the light and the dark meet to create something beautiful. This particular work of art is the joining of two hearts as one to beat together forever from here on.

I kiss her lips as we sway to our first dance as husband and wife, and then I pull her close so I can whisper in her ear. “Of all the battles I’ve fought in my life, there’s one in particular I’m glad I didn’t back down from…the one for your heart.”
