“Okay,” he answers and lifts his head. My green eyes meet his blue ones and our friendship seems to bridge the distance we placed between ourselves. “So, can I join you and Harper for cake? Can we hang out like old times?”

I laugh and slide my arm through his. “My cake is your cake.”

Corey walks me inside and rests at my locker with Harper, while I grab my books. We only get a few minutes before heading to class and promise to have lunch together. It feels normal again.

I grab my phone and quickly send Onyx a text.

ME: Harper and Corey are coming over for cake and a movie.

Onyx: He apologized?

ME: Yup. He’s an ass, but he’s our friend. If you don’t get done too late, you should join us.

Onyx: I’ll be late. You guys have fun and I’ll join you after the movie.

ME: Okay. Good luck today <3

Onyx: Oh we heart emoji now…

ME: ??

“I can’t believehow depressing Ms. Franklin has to make English.” Harper groans before shoving another piece of cake into her mouth. After school, they both came over and we made a few pizzas. Harper brought a huge red-velvet cake with cream-cheese frosting. In the middle was a giant pink ‘17’ with fake pink glitter all over it. It was perfect. We ate and laughed and talked about our classes. Everything felt normal. I didn’t realize how much I was missing this until now.

Corey bursts out laughing around the cake in his mouth. “It’s fucking Romeo and Juliet, of course it’s depressing.”

“I like the movie. I just skip the end.” Harper shrugs her shoulders, and this time, I bust out laughing.

“The end is what makes the whole story.” I giggle.

“I just think there are a million different books that teach about love or loss or whatever she is trying to teach us. Why choose a star–crossed lovers’ tale.”

I take a bite of cake and smirk at her. “Because the feuding also makes it very exciting.”

Corey glances between the two of us, a look of disgust on his face. “Please say Romeo and Juliet is not the movie we’re watching tonight.”

We both laugh, and this time, some of the red cake crumbs go flying. “No, no. You are safe.”

I move from the couch and go to grab the remote. I flick on a car-race thriller and everyone relaxes. Once I’m sure they’re both paying more attention to the movie than me, I take my phone out and check it. Onyx hasn’t responded since this morning. I miss him. Even though it’s been great having Corey and Harper here, I feel like something is missing now. I listen to my friends joke around and laugh every time Harper covers her face if blood is on the screen. I don’t even notice when someone knocks on the door.

Harper turns wide eyes to me and lifts her brow. “Lover boy returns?”

“I thought he was recording?” Corey says a second after.

I bounce up from the couch and race to the door. I look in the peep-hole first, before unlocking the chain and opening the door.

Onyx breezes in, his arms automatically wrapping around me. “How was your night?”

“Good,” I assure him, leaning back into his embrace. He looks tired and his hair is slightly rumpled. I can only imagine how many times he has ran his fingers through it.

“We were just leaving.” Harper and Corey appear behind us. Onyx tenses, but I grab his hand and squeeze.

“You can finish the movie,” he says, glancing over all of us. I meet Harper’s eyes and plead with her to take Corey home. I’m ready to call it a night.

“Nah, we really can’t. Jade needs her beauty sleep.” Harper laughs and tugs Corey with her toward the door. She stops to give me a side hug and so does Corey. It’s only slightly awkward since Onyx is still holding my hand. They head out and I close the door behind them.

“I mean we could have finished the movie,” I hear Corey say, his voice faint as they walk away.
