My smile drops. I feel cold inside when I think of the guy I used to call my best friend. The one who spent countless nights next to me, keeping me safe, when my mom wasn’t home. Then it crashes into me all over again about why Mom stayed gone in the first place. How I lost everyone important to me and was all alone. The way friendships were ruined and how my life would have been very different. But then I may not have this now with Onyx.

“I don’t think I’m ready.” My voice catches on the thick ball of emotion.

He nods and hugs me. “I’ll never force you. I just want you to know I will support you if you ever decide you want to make peace with him.”

“You’re the best, you know that?” I give him a watery smile and lean up to take his lips with mine. “I love you more than anything.”

Onyx’s eyes gleam and he pulls me onto his lap. “That's what I’m counting on, Star. Forever.” He cradles my face between his palms. “I’m your rhythm. You’re my lyrics. This is our tour. No one can fuck with that.”

ChapterThirty-Five

Jade

“Thank you, Houston!” Onyx shouts into the mic and the crowd answers, going crazy. Every show has been better than the last for the whole tour. Rise Above, Ocean, The Kid. It's a tour of epic proportions. We’re sold out all over. The venues that previously backed out due to Mia and Zander’s scandal are offering double to get us in. Onyx refuses because he knows that will mean more money from the fans and having his fans go broke to see a concert is not what he is about.

I jump up and down in the front row, where I’m sitting with Mia and her best friend Tabbi. I’m trying my hardest to ignore Ezra Hamilton, who sits on the other side of Tabbi. Ocean is struggling to accept that he signed an artist she has wanted a duet with for years. Onyx said it's a power play. I think Ezra’s just playing with her emotions, but only time will tell.

Onyx pulls a stool to the middle of the stage and the lights dim. I glance at Mia, who raises her brow at me just as confused. His stage has been pretty set for the past couple of months. I know his routine and have it memorized in my sleep. My skin prickles with forewarning.

“ENCORE, ENCORE, ENCORE!” The chants keep going and I watch as figures move around on stage. It's too dark to make anything out. I can’t do anything but watch.

“Ya’ll have been a wonderful crowd tonight.” Onyx’s voice is gravelly in the mic and everyone cheers again, while he continues to speak. “I have a special treat for you tonight. But first I’m going to need a little help. Jade, can you please come to the stage?”

The cheering gets louder and I’m being led by security to the stairs before I can stop them. My legs keep moving, but I have murder in my eyes for the gorgeous rap god on stage. I will not be distracted by his bare chest, abs or the freaking tattoos.

“What is it this time?” I ask him, my mouth touching his ear, so only he can hear me.

He smirks and leads me over to the stool. I sit on it, and my shaking hands grip the edges. “All right. I love you too, baby.” He winks at me and I want to die of embarrassment. A hundred thousand people actually awww just listening to him.

Ocean appears on stage next, her hand in the air. The noise is deafening. My mouth drops open and she laughs at me. Her guitar is strapped to her body and she finds her position on the stage. The lights plunge into darkness before flaring back to life. The soft yellow lights dance around the stage like stars. My heart thunders in my chest.

Ocean strums her guitar, a melody I haven’t heard before. Onyx’s voice blends with the guitar and Ocean joins him in the chorus. Tears slide down my cheeks. Each verse is more beautiful than the last.

Dance with me tonight…

Their voices trail off, and Ocean strums the last chord. I jump off the seat and throw myself into Onyx’s arms. He catches me, like always, holding my body to his tightly before setting me back on my seat. “I love you, Little Star. From the moment you crashed into me until fate intervened again. I will love you until I take my last breath.”

Onyx bends forward and lays the mic on the ground. His hands grip my face and he brings our lips together briefly. He kisses along my cheek until he reaches my ear. “Marry me.”

I pull away and his eyes are watching, waiting for my answer. I nod, throwing my hands around his neck and I hold him tight. “I love you. Yes.”

Onyx steps out of my embrace and reaches into his back pocket. He pulls a box out. I can already tell this story will be trending on social media by tomorrow morning. He flashes the box to the crowd, before taking the ring and sliding it on my finger. The crowd is going crazy. Phones are flashing and everyone is chanting aloud with Ocean’s song.

The stage lights dim and the strobe turns, continuing to shade us in starlight. Ocean plays her guitar. Onyx takes my hand in his and ushers me off the stage. Our friends, my family, are there to embrace us. My heart is bursting. Onyx holds me tight, refusing to let go. It feels perfect.

“You’re perfect,” he tells me and our lips meet.

The Interview

“Kid, you’ve been on a whirlwind tour across the world in the past few months, how does it feel to be back in the US?”

My lips quirk up. “It’s good. We have one more stretch in Canada before the tour is over.”

“It’s been quite the exciting tour, hasn’t it? I feel like there is always a story developing around you guys.”
