Kierden left me on the bed while he crossed the room and opened the door, angling his body so no one could see past him when he did.

“How is she?” Eisley asked quietly.

“Fine, now.” He didn’t budge.

“Please let me see her. I know I should’ve sent someone for you sooner, but Dirue said not to. It was a moment of poor judgment for both of us. We didn’t realize how fragile humans are.”

“A moment of poor judgment that could’ve cost Nissa herlife,” the king growled.

Maybe I’d been closer to death than I realized.

But Eisley had helped keep me sane since I’d been in Kierden’s kingdom, so I couldn’t leave her to deal with him on her own. I slipped out of bed and padded toward the door.

“You knew she had been starved too,” Kierden said flatly.

His sister didn’t answer immediately.

I pulled the door away from the king and stepped out in front of him, flashing Eisley a small smile. There was a rolling cart next to her, and the food on it looked absolutely incredible. My stomach rumbled, unsurprisingly. “I’m fine, Eisley. And I’m sure you had a good reason for everything you did or didn’t do. No one here knows how to deal with humans.”

Her gaze moved to me, grateful.

Kierden’s hand landed on my hip, his grip tight as he pulled me back two steps until I collided with his chest.

“Thank you for the food.” I caught Eisley’s hand long enough to squeeze it, then grabbed the handle of the cart. “I really am fine. I’m sure he’ll get tired of me and let me out of here soon.” With that, I stepped backward.

Kierden didn’t move, though, so all I managed to do was press my ass to the erection waiting for me.

“We’ll talk later,” Kierden warned her.

I looked up at him long enough to flash him a glare, and he met my eyes for the briefest moment before looking back to Eisley. “And…” He paused for a moment. “Thank you.”

Her expression softened, and she dipped her head in a nod.

He set a hand on the cart’s handle too and then took a few steps back, pulling me and the food inside with him before closing the door unceremoniously.

“You’re not shaking anymore,” he said, picking me up easily and carrying me toward the bed.

“Which means I can walk on my own feet.”

He set me down on the mattress—next to the snoring esu, who had ended up snuggling together at some point. When he sat down on the other side, he pulled the food cart closer. His gaze moved over it like he was cataloguing everything.

I started to reach for a bowl of fruit on the side closest to me, but before I could grab it, he plucked a plate off the cart and set it in my hands.

I blinked down at the food.

It was some kind of breakfast cake, with thick chocolate sauce drizzled over it and nuts sprinkled over that.

“Why?” I asked him, not bothering to explain what I was questioning. We both knew I was asking why he’d picked that.

“Your diet will mainly consist of things to help you gain weight until you’ve recovered from the trauma you don’t want to tell me about.” He grabbed a bowl of some strange gel-like substance and set it next to me, then plucked another three plates off the cart and added it to the others he’d given me.

“I already feel better than I have in ages,” I told him. “I think your blood might have healed the effects of thattrauma I don’t want to tell you about. Or at least made a dent in it.”

When I looked down at my thigh, I honestly thought it looked a little thicker.

He leaned closer to me, grabbed the hem of my shirt, and lifted it up.

Some part of me wanted to shrink at the sudden intensity of his stare. But he had bathed with me the night before, and given me a climax too, so there wasn’t really anything to hide from.
