I pull back. Rory’s eyes widen as I suddenly sweep her off of her feet. I turn around to see my parents looking at me with tilted heads. My father raises an eyebrow, caught in a manner of deep thought.

Well, they don’t seem angry, that’s the best I could have hoped for.

“Mother, Father, I’ll catch you both tomorrow!” I tease as I walk past them.

No doubt the King and Queen are bewildered by what I’ve just done, but I’m sure they’ll be more receptive to Rory once they learn she’s the one who saved my life.

No one follows me as I exit the open fields, disappearing into the gardens. Rory rests her head on my chest as I make way for my private manor.

As I do so, I cannot help but smile gleefully, allowing myself to enjoy the rush of good feelings flooding my body. I just can’t believe that it’s all over, that I can finally afford to let my guard down again.

After having to keep a constant eye over my shoulder for a long time, I’m safe again, as is Rory. I’m already imagining what a blissful tomorrow would look like now that Vippera has been dealt with.

The only thing I’m going to have to deal with now is the public’s reception to me being open and affectionate with a human. The fact that she’s a servant doesn’t do much to help but I could care less right now.

Anything beats having to deal with Vippera. I smile at the thought of her being tossed into the cells. If I completely had my way, I would have thrown away the key myself and left her there to rot for her treasonous sins.

I can’t imagine her father is going to be happy about what’s unfolded, but there’s nothing he can do. If anything, he’s just as guilty and should be locked up too.

I stride up to the door of the manor and kick it open, Rory giggling as we enter. A servant looks up from cleaning a nearby table.

“You there!” I call him. “Come hither.”

“Yes sir, how can I be of service?”

“See to it that food is delivered to the dining room as soon as possible. After that, I relieve you of your duties for the evening. I wish to be left alone and undisturbed.”

Rory looks up at me with eyes of admiration, perhaps liking the sight of me being assertive. The servant bows and takes his leave, shooting a look of skepticism at Rory.

“Now as for you my dear…” I moan with a low voice, rousing excitement in her. “Let’s bring you to the bedroom.”

Once inside, I let her down and remove my training gear, leaving myself shirtless. I take a cloth and wipe sweat from my forehead.

“Oh Zalith, you’re bleeding,” says Rory.

“That’s not my blood,” I chuckle. “By the way, good work out there tonight.”

My compliment fills her face with delight as she throws her hands together in exhilaration.

“Did you see me use my powers?” she asks. “What did it feel like?”

“I felt a sudden protective energy come over me. It was warm, like you were right there with me.”

“Really?” she giggles.

“Indeed,” I say with a smile. “You’ve got some good timing too. The assassins launched their attack the moment the shield was cast and even saved me from a nasty hit or two. These guys were the best of the best, and there were two of them at that.”

Rory looks down at her outstretched hands.

“If not for you and your abilities, I’d be dead, Rory.”

“I’m still in shock that I pulled it off,” she remarks in awe.

“You did exceptionally well for someone who just started training. How does it feel?” I ask.

“Amazing,” she gasps with laughter as she blushes. The sight of her skin reddening floods my body with a wave of pleasure. “I’m glad I finally got the chance to put my powers to use, and for something big, too.”

She takes a step closer to me, closing the distance between us.
