ZALITH

Aday has come and gone. I spent the whole time pacing back and forth as the daylight hours flew by before again becoming drenched in the dark of night. My hope is as abundant as the light in this place; none.

The only thing stopping me from rescuing Rory is this damned cell which won’t budge no matter how much I pull at it. I’m so close to her yet she’s just out of reach, and there’s not a fucking thing I can do about it.

Vippera knows she has magic. Without me there to protect her, only the gods know what she could be doing to Rory as I rot away in here. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Vippera's promise to keep Rory alive was all just a lie, just so she could get her hands on the throne.

“The tyrant bitch should be the one wasting away in here, not me.”

My parents won’t be too happy if they find Vippera roaming around the palace either… Wait! My parents!

At that moment, the dread in me spikes as I realize Vippera could have done something to them without me knowing. After all, why wouldn’t she exact her vengeance on them? They’re the ones who arrested her in the first place, and Vippera doesn’t seem like the type to forgive.

And Rory… I swear to the gods that if Vippera has laid another hand on her, I’ll deliver the killing blow myself!

Even in my speech to myself, all remains hopeless with no way of getting out of here. I’ve never known anyone as evil as Vippera. Seemingly unstoppable. I don’t know how I’m going to get to her, but I’ll die trying to save Rory if that’s what it takes.

I recline my head against the wall, wishing for a miracle. Just then, I hear a nearby door open, followed by the sound of footsteps.

“Must be that bitch…”

I turn around to face Vippera, but shock overcomes me at the sight of my servant Slyth, standing there with keys in his hand.

“Slyth!”

“Did you miss me?” he chuckles.

I rush forward, grabbing the bars.

“I’m glad to see a friendly face!”

Slyth looks around the cell.

“Looks like you barely kept yourself contained. Let’s get you out of here.”

I’m amazed that he has somehow not been apprehended as he unlocks the cell. I step out, surging with a newfound wave of energy to get Rory back.

“Slyth, they have Rory in their hands too. Do you know where they’ve taken her?” I ask.

“You need not worry about her Zalith,” he says with a coy smile. “I got her back first before coming here, just as I thought you would have wanted me to.”

“You smart son of a bitch!” I exclaim, barely able to contain my excitement.

Slyth hands me a dagger. I fixate it on my waistband as he looks to the exit.

“We must move quietly and quickly.”

“Let’s move.”

We stick to the shadows as we make our way to the main halls of the palace.

“Have you seen Vippera around?” I whisper.

“I did at one point,” he replies. “Just outside the palace structure.”

He stops moving and turns around, looking at me with a worried look in his eye.

“I have a dreaded feeling that something terrible is about to happen, Zalith. She had a lot more of her men with her. Whatever she’s planning, we have to put a stop to it before things grow worse.”
