“Well, that takes care of the entertainment. Come on then Zalith, chop chop!”

Zalith grunts. Suddenly, he keels over in pain, clutching his side.

“My… My ribs! They hurt!”

Vippera rolls his eyes.

“Will a healer take a look at him, for fuck’s sake?”

She rolls her eyes. His acting leaves much to be desired, but I know he’s trying to buy me as much time as possible. My trembling grows stronger as magic pulsates from my body through the earth.

A healer gives the all-clear for Zalith, who then drags his feet slowly toward Vippera. They go through the vows, with each word from Zalith slurred and stumbled past as if he’s drunk. The magic in my body begins to strain, but I give a final push.

“Do you, Prince Zalith of Lodra, take Princess Vippera of Jalma to be your mate?” asks Shradga, his voice filled with loathing.

I have only seconds left before the deal is sealed. Zalith is one vow away from marrying Vippera. He growls under his breath and opens his mouth hesitantly.

“I… I…”

“The hills!” shouts my father, rising to his feet. “The Andakya battalion has come!”

Each one of us spin around to see an army coming over the horizon, their numbers as strong as the Jalma force. At the sight of them, Vippera erupts into a rage.

“Bastards! How the hell did they find us?”

Zalith smiles, laughing in disbelief as does Slyth.

“Shut the fuck up!” barks Vippera. “You’ve just signed the death warrant for everyone here, starting with the human bitch of yours! Father, slice her head off!”

Tikzorcu grabs me by the arm. As he does, the magic I’ve been keeping contained suddenly bursts out from my body, spreading up Tikzorcu’s arm as he disintegrates in place. His scream fades into nothing as his body disappears.

Energy fills me as I begin to float in the air. Vippera drops her sword, joining those around me as they marvel in wonder.

“What the –”

A wavelike force shoots out from my body, the explosion rocking the ground as everyone is sent flying off of their feet.

ZALITH

The out-of-nowhere explosion has thrown everyone off of their feet, including me as I look up to the sky in a haze. My head is ringing as I look around in confusion, scrambling back to my feet as quickly as I can.

Rory… I must see if she is okay.

I turn around with a moment to spare, watching in horror as she becomes swallowed up by a green beam of light. The light fuses into her, creating a brightness so intense that it’s blinding to look at.

Another vibration rocks the earth around us, but I stay on my feet this time. Thinking something has gone terribly wrong with Rory’s magic, I break into a run, covering my eyes as I advance on her position.

A sudden hand reaches out and pulls me back. I turn around to see a panicked Slyth, his eyes squinting as he tries to look at me.

“Zalith, don’t go any further!” he screams.

“But Rory’s inside that green beam of energy, she’s dying!” I yell.

“No!” he exclaims, shaking his head. “That green beam is Rory’s magic! It’s her!”

“What!” I stop in disbelief, watching as the green light transforms into a green silhouette of sorts. I’m stunned, having never witnessed such magic before. I knew she was gifted, but no one could have guessed a human would bear this much power in her hands.
