Claim her.

The words are soft whispers in my ears. And the whispers are in my voice.

Claim her. Claim her. Claim her.

I don’t know why I feel the sudden need to claim a human woman I have never met before. I also don’t know what it is about her that feels so strange.

Why can’t I get her out of my head?

The Jalma naga army are loading the human prisoners into the wagons they have ready and waiting for them.

I have to drag my gaze away from them, away fromher, and I force myself to listen to my father’s conversation with the King of Jalma.

At least Vippera isn’t here,I think gratefully to myself, and the thought of seeing her now makes me shudder with disgust.

Maybe you wouldn’t rebel against this marriage so much if Vippera wasn’t completely horrible.

I know that it is the truth. I have no problem with an arranged marriage. I am willing to do what it takes to ensure the prosperity and stability of Lodra.

And I am also sure I’d be happy with anyone.

My gaze is dragged back to the blonde girl. Why can’t I get her out of my head?

But Vippera is especially trying to deal with. She is horrible, bloodthirsty, and uncivilized.

She should go visit the dark elves. They’d accept her gratefully,I think nastily.

The human woman, myhuman woman, is struggling against the Jalma soldiers’ orders to get into the cabin.

Before I know it, I am walking over to the wagon.

“Let go of her,” I order them, and they let go of her immediately. They do not really have to listen to my orders, with their King standing right there.

The human woman is staring at me with her large blue eyes from where she sits in the wagon after they finally managed to force her in. I swallow as I look reluctantly away from her.

“I chose her. She can come with me, in our wagon,” I tell the Jalma soldier closest to me. The soldier’s eyes widen with shock.

“She won’t ride in the royal cabin. But she will come with us in our wagons,” I continue insisting.

“But she is property of the Jalma royal family now,” the soldier says defiantly.

Says who? You just showed up here and started grabbing the first humans you could see.

The rest of the Jalma soldiers start to shuffle their feet as the soldier in front of my stares at me defiantly.

I am conscious then that all the naga around me are staring at me, including the King of Jalma.

My father hurries over and clears his throat loudly.

“Your betrothed’s family,” my father starts saying. I know that he is trying to do damage control. “Have claimed these human villagers as their slaves. I am sure we are all fine with that. We want Princess Vippera to feel welcomed into our kingdom and our family.”

I am not unaware of the fact that Vippera’s father is staring at me almost coldly. When I look at him, I meet his gaze unwaveringly.

I know that I should not be tempting fate and danger, but I hate Vippera and her entire family.

Vippera’s father continues to gaze at me coldly, but he seems to realize that I won’t break his gaze.

He looks away from me to look at my father, then clears his throat. I cannot help feeling a large sense of satisfaction that he broke first.
