Then she flinched.

My girl actually flinched.

Not my anything.

She clenched her eyes shut, and I took the phone from her. She didn’t stop me, so I figured I was good to go ahead and keep reading.

Dennis: You think someone else is going to put up with your bullshit? Good luck finding a man who will do the stuff you asked for in bed. That’s not marriage material behavior. You’re better off sticking with me. I can keep all that in check.

Rage washed over me so fast I had to set down her phone before I chucked it across the room.

“He’s a piece of shit,” I said, my jaw clenching.

Luna nodded, but her eyes were lined with silver as she took another drink. Her shoulders drooped, almost like she was curling in on herself, and it physically hurt for me to see her like that.

“Luna,” I said, my voice soft. Fuck, what could I say to make it better? What could I do?

“It’s fine,” she said, trying her best to hide the pain in her eyes. “It’s nothing I haven’t heard before.”

“You should never hear anything like that,” I said. “Ever. You don’t deserve that.”

She shrugged, as if to say maybe I do, and I hated that he’d gotten her to that point mentally. “Let’s forget it,” she said, waving me off. “I just want to enjoy this party. These people are so fun. I might ask them for a job.” She tried to smile, but the light didn’t reach her eyes.

Fuck Dennis.

Every instinct in my body roared to find a way to make her smile like she was before he texted, before he spouted off a line of bullshit that made the joy in her eyes dim. Made her question herself.

The singer on the stage wrapped up, and I hopped out of my chair, grabbing the offered mic before asking the DJ to put on Better Days by Dermot Kennedy.

The music filtered through the surround sound speakers, the lyrics rolling through on the projected screen, but I didn’t need them.

The was Luna’s favorite song, and I’d memorized every single word. She’d played it enough that it was easy.

I brought the mic to my lips, looking down at her from my spot on the stage, and I sang.

I ignored all the whistles and impressed cheers from the massive crowd watching me, and focused solely on Luna.

Her eyes were wide, her lips parted as her features shifted from hurt, to shocked, to absolutely overjoyed, which only made me sing harder, louder. I moved around the stage as the song progressed, working my way down it and to our table as it neared its end.

Luna’s chest was rising and falling, and her smile was bright enough to light up the entire ballroom. I dropped to my knees before her, bringing us to eye-level where she sat as I crooned out the last words of the song.

Cheers erupted around us, the applause overwhelming as I caught my breath.

Luna clapped before leaping out of the chair and wrapping her arms around my neck. I caught her effortlessly, hauling her against me as I brought us to standing. She pulled back slightly, her lips finding mine.

I clung to her, taking her kiss and claiming it. I slanted my mouth over hers, falling helplessly into the kiss as she opened for me. It was the sweetest, sexiest invitation, and I ignored all the voices in my head telling me this wasn’t real. Instead, I dove right the fuck in, sliding my tongue between her lips, relishing the gasp that came from the contact.

It didn’t matter that we were in a very public and crowded room, I wanted to splay her out on the table and take my time worshiping her body right fucking now.

She drew away just enough to look at me. Her lips were swollen from my kiss, and her eyes…

Fuck me.

They were churning, begging me to do just what I wanted with her.

CHAPTER 9

Luna

“I’m sorry,” I blurted the words, my heart racing from Brad’s kiss.

Or the kiss I initiated.

But he certainly didn’t seem to mind.

“You keep saying that,” he said, looking down on me, his eyes flickering from mine to my mouth and back again. The next singer came up to us, and Brad handed off the mic without even looking at the person.

He’d sang my favorite song…for me.

To make me smile.

To make me laugh. How could he be that amazing? I mean, I always knew how awesome he was, that’s why he was my best friend, but add everything that had happened in the last couple days between us and I was seeing him in an entirely new light.

Our bodies were flush and his arms were still around me. I had no urge to move, no desire to put distance between us. My heart thumped in my chest, chanting more, more, more.
