I dressed in plain bikini panties, an oversized T-shirt, and a pair of cotton shorts. I had my hair in a towel with the brush I found in that backpack in hand. Eagle was sprawled out on a chair. He stood when I entered the room and moved to the refrigerator.

“What do you want to drink? I’ve got burgers and fries for your dinner. I can probably find something else if you don’t like that.”

“No. That sounds wonderful.” I meant it too. Even soggy leftovers from some crappy fast food restaurant sounded like heaven right now. “Whatever you have to drink is fine.”

“Soda, then.” He paused, shaking his head slightly. “And some water. You probably need the water worse than a fuckin’ soda.” He muttered under his breath.

“I’m sorry to put you out so much.” I felt horrible enough as it was. The last thing I wanted was this guy feeling like he had to babysit me. “You don’t have to stay. I promise I won’t go anywhere. You can even lock me in if you don’t trust me, but you don’t have to ruin your night by staying here with me.”

Eagle turned from the fridge, his head whipping around in my direction. “What?”

I couldn’t help my flinch. “I just mean that… You don’t have to take care of me. I’ll be fine on my own.”

“Girl, I don’t do anything I don’t want to do. If I didn’t want to be here, I wouldn’t be.”

He turned back to the fridge and brought out a bottle of water, a pop, and a beer. I assumed the beer was for him, though I wouldn’t mind having one. Just because I could.

I put my hands in my lap and waited for him to bring the food and drinks to the table. Looked like grilled burgers and homemade fries. He set my plate down and put the drinks between us and looked at me. I wasn’t sure what he was waiting on, but decided it was for me to choose my poison. Naturally, I snagged the beer and popped the top before he could protest. Surprisingly, he just smirked before getting back up to get another beer from the fridge.

I took a swig and winced. I really hated beer, but by God, I was going to drink it. Wouldn’t you know it, Eagle noticed.

“Drink what you want. You want to switch or drink all three, it’s up to you.”

“Who made the food?”

“One of the old ladies. Blossom, I think. She’s a great cook and spoils us pretty badly.” He didn’t smile, but his tone was one of affection. “Eat up while it’s hot. Her fries are pretty good.”

Pretty good didn’t even cover them. I’d never tasted anything so delicious in all my life! I started out a little hesitant. Last thing I wanted was this man seeing me devour a meal like I was starving. Even if I was. Three bites into the fries and one bite of the burger later, I couldn’t have given a good Goddamn if he thought I was disgusting. The food was like ambrosia! The fries were perfectly done with the perfect amount of salt and grease, the burger thick, juicy, and loaded with the most wonderful cheese in the world. Even the beer started to taste exquisite.

Before I knew it, I’d eaten everything on my plate and trespassed on Eagle’s. He didn’t say anything, but scooted his beer over to me. I took it without hesitation. When it was all finished, I was full beyond belief. I sat back with a groan before looking up at Eagle.

Then the full impact of what I’d just done hit me.

“Fuuuuck…” I slumped down in the chair, resting my head on the back of it. “I’m so sorry.”

“For what? Eatin’?”

“I ate everything on your plate too!” I snatched a napkin and wiped my mouth vigorously. Sure enough, it came back stained with grease, ketchup, and mustard. “I’m never living this down.”

Eagle just shook his head and stood, bringing another plate from the bar at the small kitchen. “There’s more. I brought enough for you to reheat tomorrow if you want.”

“No. I feel like I’m about to explode.”

He nodded. “I’ll put this in the fridge, then. It’s there if you get hungry again.”

There was an uncomfortable silence. I wasn’t exactly sure why it seemed uncomfortable other than Eagle seemed like he wanted to be anywhere but here.

“You don’t have to stay with me, you know.”

“You said that. You don’t like my company?” The man could be so kind and gentle, but now he looked and sounded gruff and completely unapproachable.

“I didn’t say that. You just seem… uncomfortable. Here. With me.”

He looked away, shaking his head slightly. I’d noticed this gesture several times. Like he was about to do something he either didn’t agree with or didn’t like for some other reason.
