“Hey,” he responds, his eyes flicking to the crew.

“What you doing?”

“Digging a hole.”

“I can see that. Why?”

“Work.”

“You got a job?”

“Temporarily. I offered to help in any way I can for some cash.”

“You just walked up to these guys and asked for a job?”

“Yep.”

I glance back at the crew, at the glowering faces pointed in our direction. I can’t tell if they are angry that I am interrupting their hard-working coworker or concerned for my safety—considering who it is that I am speaking to.

I refocus on Rhett. I admire his grit.

“Good for you,” I say.

He doesn’t respond, just stares at me. It drives me crazy when he does this.

“Have you…” I step closer, lowering my voice, “found out anything new about who paid Jesse to deliver the letters?”

He begins pushing the dirt around with the tip of his shovel. “No. Not yet.”

“Well, I have and I wanted to spitball something with you…”

“Yeah?” His brow cocks.

“Yeah. First, I found out who Dr. Harris Taylor’s redheaded spying neighbor is. Her name is Gloria Lopez. Rumor is she’s an illegal immigrant, been here for about three years. No one really seems to know her. Doesn’t go out much.”

“She owns the house?”

“No. A man named Allen Reed owns it. I know him.”

“How?”

“Well, I don’tknow himknow him, but he was interviewed for the paper once. Owns a small stocks and bonds company. Gave an interview about the economy, I don’t know, I didn’t read it. Anyway, he’s got an apartment in New York where he stays most of the time. I guess she stays here.”

“Are they married?”

“Nope. But she lives with him, so they’re something. He’s divorced, ex-wife and kids live in New York.”

“So she’s a bored, nosy neighbor.”

“Maybe, maybe something more. Okay, so I also found out who owns the abandoned house at the end of the street. It’s a real estate company based in Burlington. Bought some homes in the area when prices were low. Couldn’t sell that particular home, and it’s just sitting there now.”

“How did you get this information?”

“Called in a favor from my old source from the newspaper.”

“Hitting the streets again, huh?”

“I told you I missed it.”
