But first, he needed to finish his work.

Even though that was his intention, he only got a bit more grading done before he was searchingideas for dateson Google. Daphne had been happy to just go out to eat at fancy restaurants for their dates, but Will thought Janessa might enjoy a bit more variety.

It was unfortunate that they were heading into winter—a season he knew that Janessa didn’t enjoy being outside in. Also, it was too bad that Janessa didn’t like to work out because they would have been able to spend more time together if they’d both enjoyed going to the gym.

After reading through a bunch of different ideas, Will still didn’t have a definite plan of where they should go on their next date. However, he had some suggestions that he could offer when they talked about it.

He was just putting the last of his graded papers into his leather bag when his phone rang. Anticipating that it would be Jay, Will grabbed his phone off the table. When he saw Janessa’s name on the screen, he smiled and tapped it to put the call on speakerphone.

“Hello,” he said as he picked up his plate to carry it to the kitchen.

“Am I interrupting anything?” Janessa asked.

“Nope. Just finished some grading, and now I’m cleaning up my supper dishes.” He set his phone down on the counter so he could scrape his plate before putting it into the dishwasher.

“What did you have?”

“Some lasagna that my mom sent home with me last week to put in the freezer. I was late getting home from school since I stayed after to help a couple of students. What did you have?”

“Well, apparently it was pasta night because Charli made spaghetti for us.”

Will was so glad that Janessa had called. It made him feel like she really was as interested in being with him as he was with her.

If he was always the one establishing contact between them, it would have made him wonder. But then, he was talking about Janessa here. She wasn’t really a passive person, and he doubted that she’d be content to just wait around for him to call or text her. He liked that about her.

They didn’t talk for super long, but before they ended the call, they discussed what they would do on their next date. Though they both agreed that they should go somewhere outside of Serenity, they hadn’t been able to figure out what to do.

Since it would probably be the weekend before they went out again, they had time to decide, so Will wasn’t disappointed that they hadn’t finalized anything. It just meant they’d have to talk about it again, and that didn’t seem like a bad thing to him.

“I’d better go,” Janessa said. “I still need to do a few things before bed.”

“Well, thank you for calling. Talking with you was a great way to end my day.”

“I wasn’t sure if you’d mind if I called.”

“Never,” he assured her. “If you want to talk, call me. I mean, if it’s during school hours, you might have to wait a bit for a reply.”

“I think I can do that,” Janessa said with a laugh.

Though he didn’t want to say goodnight, Will chose to focus on the fact that she’d actually called him, and that they’d been able to talk for awhile. That was a definite positive in his books.

By the time Friday night rolled around, they’d finally settled on dinner and a show at a local theater in Coeur d’Alene. Neither of them had been active in theater in high school, though they’d attended most of the shows during those years.

This theater was a small community one that was putting fundraising performances for one of their members who had been diagnosed with cancer. They were putting on a performance ofBrigadoon, which Will remembered seeing during one of his years in high school.

They’d once again arranged to meet in the parking lot, but Will wasn’t sure how Janessa was going to get out of the house without Charli or Aria grilling her. Living alone definitely had its perks.

He had wondered if there would be an attempt to get everyone together for pizza that night. Thankfully, it seemed that most of them had other plans. Jay had a late practice with his team in preparation for an away game the next night. When Cole had been on the team, most of the Halversons had traveled to the away games. Will wasn’t sure how many planned to attend the next night. Skylar, for sure would be there, since she was a cheerleader for the team.

Will planned to go, and he hoped that Janessa wanted to as well. It would be the perfect excuse for them to spend time together. No one would think it was weird for them to drive together or sit with each other at the game.

Will got out of his car as Janessa pulled in next to him. “Hi.”

“Sorry I’m a little late,” she said with a smile. “Had to wait until Aria left with Gareth.”

“Charli wasn’t around?”

“Nope. She and Layla went to a birthday party.”
