This far out from the breakup, Will was inclined to agree. But right when it had happened, he certainly hadn’t felt that way. “Realizing she’d moved on didn’t really shock me, though I could have done without her bringing him to church because now everyone will be talking about us again.”

“Makes me think that maybe that’s what she wanted.”

Will nodded. “Does kinda seem likely.”

“I honestly thought that after dating for as long as you guys had, you’d go the distance. Doesn’t give me much hope for a relationship.”

Jackson looked glum as he uncapped his water bottle and took another drink. Will wished that he could assure Jackson that things would work out for him, but he didn’t feel particularly confident about that himself.

“Have you gone on any dates lately?” Will asked.

“Nope. Not sure who to ask out.”

“Do you use an app?”

“Off and on. I kinda like to meet women in person first. See what kind of vibe they give off.”

“Vibe?”

“Yeah. You know… do they smile easily? Do they laugh? Or are they super serious?”

“So you want a woman who smiles and laughs?”

“Yep. Can you imagine me with a serious woman? Or one without a sense of humor?”

Will let out a huff of laughter. “Nope. Definitely can’t.”

“It’s hard to tell a lady’s vibe from looking at a couple of pictures and reading that they want things likelong walks on the beachorcuddling in front of a fireorwatching romantic movies.I mean, do guys really fall for that?”

“Uh… maybe?”

Jackson gave him a look. “Doyoulike those things?”

“Maybe not the romantic movies.”

“But long walks on the beach? Cuddling in front of a fire? Where’s the fun stuff?”

“What’s the fun stuff?” Will asked. “In your opinion.”

“Funny movies only. Going bowling or roller skating. Playing games.”

“Well, best of luck finding a woman who fits everything you want.”

“She has proven to be illusive,” Jackson said with a sigh.

“Hey, you two,” Jay said as he approached them. “Let’s play some more.”

Will grudgingly got to his feet and tossed his water bottle to the side of the net, certain he’d need it again since the afternoon was warm, bordering on hot.

“Go Jay!” Misha called from where she sat.

Peyton and Layla came running over to stand next to the net, cheering them all on.

Will felt better than he had earlier. And when they all gathered at the picnic table after the next game, he had the realization that if he’d still been with Daphne, he likely wouldn’t have been there at all. Or if he had been there, he would have been on his own. She wouldn’t have been there with him the way Misha was with Jay or Aria was with Gareth.

If he ever dated again, he was going to get his friends’ opinions on the woman before he let anything get serious. He might even get Reese’s thoughts.

“I love that your mom made gingerbread cookies,” Janessa said from where she sat next to him. “It’s like it’s Christmas.”
