For a moment, he wondered if Janessa… and the others… wanted to continue to hang out, but he held back the suggestion. “Thanks. Yours too.”

As he walked to his car, Will realized that seeing Daphne and her new boyfriend that morning hadn’t been as bad as it had felt in the moment. His heart didn’t ache like it once had at the thought of their failed relationship.

That was progress, he supposed. It wasn’t that he hoped to get into another relationship, but at least now he knew that he could face the worst Daphne could throw at him without falling apart. His confidence, which had been so severely shaken by the breakup, seemed to stabilize just a bit more.

CHAPTER NINE

Janessa was running late, so she hurried into the church, then jogged down the hallway to where the committee was meeting. Certain she was going to be the last person to arrive, she rushed into the room, then glanced around.

People were still standing and talking together, so she wasn’t going to draw attention to herself by walking in after the meeting had started. Her gaze found Will almost right away.

He stood with his arms crossed, talking to… Daphne’s grandmother. Janessa frowned as she watched them. Will didn’t look upset, but his expression wasn’t always easy to read. The older woman was talking to him earnestly, but she didn’t seem to be berating him or anything.

Keeping an eye on the pair, Janessa got herself a cup of coffee and a cookie, then went to a table. When Evelyn called for them to find their seats, Janessa waited to see what Will would do.

Stepping away from Daphne’s grandmother, Will glanced around, and when he spotted Janessa, he smiled. He made his way over to where she stood next to a couple of empty chairs. She set her cup of coffee in front of one of them, and he did the same, then they took their seats.

Janessa leaned toward him, and, keeping her voice low, asked, “What was that all about?”

Before he could say anything, Evelyn began to speak.

“I’ll tell you afterward,” he whispered, then turned his attention to Evelyn.

Janessa was insanely curious, so she hoped that the meeting didn’t last too long. Will didn’t seem upset, so that was a good thing.

Thankfully, Evelyn moved the meeting along quickly. Janessa knew the woman had served on many church committees over the years, and it showed in how she managed the agenda. She was organized and didn’t let things get off-track.

“Janessa and Will, I’d like you two to be in charge of the servers we’ll be using for the dinner.”

“What about the program?” Janessa asked.

“Did you want to MC it?” Evelyn asked. “I thought you said you didn’t want to.”

“No, we don’t.”

“You and Will came up with some great ideas for the program, but since you don’t want to MC it, I’ll let whoever accepts that responsibility to design the program how they’d like. Undoubtedly they’ll incorporate several of your ideas.”

“Sounds good.”

“You two are okay with organizing the servers?” Evelyn asked.

“Yep.” Janessa glanced at Will, realizing she was speaking on his behalf and probably shouldn’t.

Will nodded. “I’m fine with that.”

“Great. I just figured that you might have a good rapport with them since you’re closer to their age. You probably teach some of them, Will.”

“I do,” he confirmed. “And I’m happy to work with them for the dinner.”

Evelyn smiled at them. “Perfect.”

She then moved on to the other aspects of the dinner. The décor people had samples of table centerpieces to show everyone, and others shared what they’d decided on for the menu for the evening.

Once she’d gone through every aspect of the event, Evelyn said, “If you’re not helping with the food, please be prepared to help with the set-up, if you’re physically able. The young people will also be there to help with the more physical stuff, but we’ll need people to put table clothes on and set the tables.”

After making sure all questions were answered, Evelyn closed the meeting with prayer, then dismissed them.

Janessa wasn’t sure if Will would want to talk there, so when he got up, she followed suit. They dumped their cups and napkins into the garbage can, then left the room.
